So having a recent “blunder” with a Windows update, I ended up just formatting my OS partition to avoid any hassle in the future.
No idea what happened, I was running a dual boot (#! and Win8), suddenly I get forced to upgrade to 8.1. Goodbye bootloader, could not for the life of me get GRUB to recognize the patition, I then found out it was corrupted when I went to just reinstall Windows. Fun times!
So this got me thinking, how vulnerable data really is. Especially if it is important data.
I went ahead and bought myself a Western Digital My Passport 1TB portable hard drive. It comes with built in Dropbox integration with automatic backup software.
This is quite a steal imo, considering it was only £43 (Decent sized USB3.0 pen drives go for half the price, but hold 1/10 or 1/20 of the space).
So I have my HDD partitioned into 4, 1 for OS, 3 for organized data. Such as Media, College and Java stuff.
All this is continuously backed up in the WD drive, which then uploads it all to Dropbox as well, well not all by the stuff I have designated. I also have it automatically backing up onto my phone as well.
So I now have 4 copies of everything important, 5 if it is Java code due to BitBucket.
I was thinking of getting myself one of those Cloud computers that fire into the router as well, then ditch Dropbox. £105 is quite a bit though, would be better just saving up £250-300 and build a home storage server.
Anyone else got some extreme backup setup going on?
