Thanks for Mustang Weekly Builds

I just thought I should thank the Sun folks publicly for the Mustang weekly builds. I’ve been using them (and occasionally reporting bugs) for several months now and I’m pleased to see the progress in performance, stability and features.

Just as I thought things were slowing down, I see this weeks b77 has a HUGE number of fixes. Several are relveant to game developers since they involve things like Java2D, ImageIO, the OpenGL pipeline, JAWT, and Web Start.

Check it out…

Months ago when I started trying out the Mustang builds I wondered if I was asking for trouble, but the builds have been very stable for me. There are a few minor glitches in some Swing things, but nothing that caused me much trouble.

Being able to report bugs much earlier in the development process, along with the more open policy enabling contributed fixes seems to have paid off.

I wonder if some of the Sun regulars here could comment on how well this has been going from their perspective?

Anyway, thanks guys!

Word. The thanks of some anonymous seamonkey on the web probably doesn’t mean a whole lot but you guys at Sun do good work.

And thanks to you for kind words and and for using the builds and providing feedback!

I think I can say it for all of us, it goes extremely well. We got way more feedback
and much earlier than in previous releases, lots of regressions were caught and fixed,
and we were able to add some features as a direct feedback from the field.

In previous releases (when we didn’t post the builds) we only had limited time from
beta to beta2 or release candidate to get the feedback, and even
less time to fix the issues found.

The community collaboration efforts are also very successfull. In some cases
the teams can’t keep up with the flood of incoming fixes =)

Thanks,
Dmitri
