Technopolies

I’ve uninstalled the 1.6b60 again and reinstalled 1.5. Works fine now. I also had some problems with an applet (http://www.tokima.com/), so i assume that 1.6 is still flawed somehow…that why it’s called beta, i think…

Thanks for checking it , Helge.
I bet the real issue is caused by living on the cutting edge

Fallout is the best game ever. Your game looks very promising! Especially for a one man band.

Just tested it out (for the first time actually) with the Java Webstart version. The game looks great! Best of all, I got very very playable framerates (about 30 fps!) on my older, slower computer.

In fact, I think you may have just convinced me I need to learn jPCT…

I just tried it. Since X-Com was probably most addictive game I ever played, it could hook me up :D.

  1. Maybe there is a lack of some atmospheric music in the background? Sounds are great, though.
  2. It will be good if you can choose between walking and running too.
  3. And another suggestion - is it the best idea of putting game into window size of current resolution? I have 1400 x 1050 on my laptop and don’t want to run a window that big.
Is there some way to log into game because that didn’t work for me?

If X-com is the UFO game then i have to correct myself…two best games ever. They bring tears to my eyes :’(

First, thanks for reviewing it, folks. There are still plenty of things to be done, but first i need your gaming experience and suggestions to evolve in proper direction

  1. Yes, actually the game supports music via FMod. Music content was removed from JWS-ed version, but it will be back as soon as i get some royalty-free music.
  2. Doable but i doubt that it is really necessary. I bet most players would prefer to move at full speed, i just tried to keep interface simple.
  3. Yes, you are right, the game starts with full screen and logs you in automatically. The next big thing in the game will be Startup screen from which you will be able to adjust preferences / user credentials before launching the game.

ohh… , i feel releived when people report reasonable FPS on their boxes ;).

Still, there are reported problems with performance on linux (i bet somehow related to AWT+GL), I am working on “settings” screen that will allow to experiment with video preferences and find the solution.

I would recommend using JPCT if you prefer to concentrate on the gameplay and keep things simple. Could be that it won’t allow you to access some fine-grained 3D stuff, but it will surelly allow you to have better understanding of what your 3D code does.

Works fine on my Linux box. “Fine” means between 12-25fps depending on the scene. But that’s on a PII-400Mhz/GeForce2MX-32MB machine, so you can’t expect too much from it anyway…

Hmm, can I ask how you did your models? From what I read on the JPCT site, it looks like uploading through the MD2 format would be ideal. Is that what you used? But then it seemed to say you’d need to upload your textures separately… how do you do that exactly? Aren’t the textures UV mapped?

I know how to UV map in Blender and export a MD2 file, as well as set up keyframes, but I’m not sure how I would map the texture otherwise. Is it relatively easy or somewhat difficult? Or do you use something entirely different?

This should help: http://www.jpct.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=266

I can’t get the jnlp to start. It asks me if I want to accept an app from you, then gets stuck on Starting Application…

I’m running Mac OS X Tiger.

-added startup screen at which you can set video/detalization options and player name.

I really want to try this, but I am getting:

on JGF - Looks like Blah^3 needs to reboot

Same here. I REALLY want to see new things in action (look great for an eye), but JGF i unfortunatelly down. It could be helpfull to have reserve link on Techopolies jars at some your web page?

;D ;D ;D
Great, I finally started it and who I found? Rolz! First screen menu is excellent, windowed mode support above all.
All aspects of game start to feel like a whole, really great job! When I started to kill some guys and get better armour / ammunition, it really feels like RPG.
I noticed there was no sounds at all this time and that my status is not displayed right (health, armor?) in right lower part of screen. Just constructive observation.
Going to play some more…

EDIT : after 10 mins of play (hapened 2 times) i am stuck and can’t move… :-[

That’s happened to me once as well… but it was during the beginning of the game (not sure if I was able to move at all that time).

This is looking really great Rolz - nice and smoth on my PC - FPS ranged from 42 - 75 - 90% time was around 55 or so. No problems. I would prefer to move by keyboard though and I didn’t really know what to do - I killed something, but my guy did it without me initiating anything, so I give him the credit

Hmm, continually having problems getting the web start to run. I dunno why. I took LWJGL out of my extensions folder (thought that might be it), but it still refuses to start. Basically it says “Starting Application” and the progress bar flashes full/empty constantly.

Have you tried deleting the game files localy and clicking on the web start again?
