i wish they would also do it for macosx then java6 would be on macs already!
Apart from them being ridiculously slow, Apple’s Java efforts are actually quite nice. They manage their own Aqua look and feel, and actually set it as default on OS X so that the horrible default LAF remains hidden. There are also some nice touches like making AppleScript available in javax.scripting. I think the main reason for the slowness in releasing new versions is that there just isn’t enough manpower in Apple’s Java unit.
Back on topic, it seems the iPhone SDK rules disallow releasing Java. It could result in applications not verified by Apple to be executed, and they want to remain in full control about what runs on the platform.
I doubt Sun would have announced plans to develop a VM for the iphone if it was going to be blocked by apple.
