Sulphur Nimbus: Hel's Elixir Demo (3D flying action adventure)

Edit: Game is now done and you can find the full version here. Original text follows:

I’m making a third person action adventure in Java. You play as a hippogriff named Sulphur Nimbus, so naturally flying is a big part of the game.

This is a demo version that I put together for promoting the game. It is made to represent what the game will be like, but it’s completely stand-alone so this island won’t actually be a part of the real game.

The game runs using Java 6 or greater, and uses JOGL for graphics. The game engine is written completely from scratch. (I could go on about technical details but I’ll refrain from that for now.) The game should run without problems on most Windows and Linux systems. It has also been reported to work on a singular Mac, but don’t count on it. If you have trouble running it, please consult the Readme or ask about it here. If you experience any crashes or freezes then any information that would help with debugging is greatly appreciated.

You might think it looks like MLP, and that’s because it used to be a fan game. However, I’ve redesigned it to separate it from any existing franchise in order to make it marketable. I tried to avoid having to redo everything though, hence the similar character proportions.

I’m running a Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1933452375/sulphur-nimbus-hels-elixir if anyone is interested in helping me make it into a full game.

It looks absolutely stunning, and the gameplay seems really nice judging by the video. I think you overdid the bloom though. Just a little bit :slight_smile:

I got this alert from Avira when running the EXE.

But the JAR is fine. Nice game.

Use Norton. It’s bad, but it’s the best :stuck_out_tongue:

Haven’t tried the game yet, I’ll try it when I have the time. I saw the kickstarter campaign, the video is AWESOME.

@ShadedVertex
Yeah, I’ve gotten several notes about that so I’ll make some adjustments in the future.

@SHC
Modern antivirus software (and security in general) tends to employ the “guilty until proven otherwise” paradigm. It’s a bit annoying when you’re a small developer. The executable contains code to download a JRE in case it’s missing on your computer - you can inspect the full source code and documentation for that here if you want to see for yourself if there’s malicious code: https://bitbucket.org/Oddwarg/groan-autodeployer

Using the jar or the batch script is usually fine though.

Thank you for the replies!

Finally had a chance to sit down and play this one for myself. The flying mechanic took some getting use to, but overall I enjoyed this demo. It reminds me alot of he old spyro games (which is a good thing ;D).

graphically I really like the character design, but the game felt “blurry” overall for some reason. Too much dust effects? Additionally I was surprised to find a black MLP in the game as I could see that causing problems down the line. Combat is acceptable.

Congrats Odd on making your kickstarter and the best of luck finishing this game!

p.s. I also made my way down the big straw in the large cup and was killed by grapejuice lol
