Subtitles/Teletext and Java!

Hi all,
Does anyone have subs on during a movie? so if anything happens that you can’t understand you can always just read the subs?

Well, i do…anyway, during live broadcasts, subs are as useful as dead tree, cause everything comes in 10 minutes too late!

So the idea is that you have a piece of software running on the client side (TV or radio) and that makes subs in real time. Sure it will make a few mistakes, but its betta than having them 10 minutes too late!

There is also another advatage, ITV2 (if you live in the UK) never have subs. And wouldn’t be cool for ITV2 and for any tv to provide subtitles without the need for human intervention. This can cut down in staff personell in ITV and no need for them to invest in subs technology. It also adds a feature thing at the end of the box of the tv.

What ya think of this idea? is it worth it?

If you make one for Hebrew I’ll buy it.

In the US subtitles are in realtime on live shows. Albeit with quite a few spelling, grammar errors as the operators type away.

hmmm, are they properly live tho? or are they broadcasted a minute or so later for the operators to type?

But this idea could be applied not only to TV, but to radio, and ciname (you could have two versions, one with subs, the other without and the subs version doesn’t cost a dime extra!)

Thinking about it, it doesn’t have to be integrated into the actual TV, it could be a set-top box. The reason why java was invented in the first place. (or is that to run a toaster?, hehe)

Do you reckon tho that the speach recongnition software is ready for this kind of leap tho?

Well, in the UK at least we get proper “live” subtitles - you can watch each word appearing on the screen half a second after it’s spoken.

I’m not sure voice recognition is able to do this yet - it’s hard enough to get an accurate transcript with a single voice, in a quiet room, after six months’ training. :-/

i live in the UK, birmingham to be more accurate. And every tv ive ever had or seen always had live broadcast’s subtitles on a couple of minutes later.

E.g. Try watching the news with subs on, youl see what i mean.

It will be hard to create such a thing, like most things are. But I do think the technology is there to create such a thing
