Yep ;D I have taken my sites down! And sorry, the Java Game Tome is down too…
Noble Master Games - http://www.noblemaster.com/
Age of Conquest - http://www.ageofconquest.com/
Multiplayer Hub - http://www.multiplayerhub.com/
It’s not much though - about 1500 daily visitors that will be affected…
I blackened out java4k.com. Sad day indeed. I feel like if SOPA/PIPA becomes reality I fear a lot of the 4k games become illegal copyright infringement. This very much affects us as game devs, because a lot of the games are inspired by others.
Indeed - we can just hope enough people will join the strike and it will have a big enough effect to both stop SOPA & PIPA.
In France, some major websites protest too. I put this into the background of my blog. Foreign countries are concerned too as SOPA would allow American corporations to block foreign websites too.
Some of them are already illegal, aren’t they?
It’s amazing how many people that this reaches all over the Internet that aren’t American. Feels like America is the whole world at times… And yeah, the law bothers me a lot too because I realize that other countries could be next if this passes, but I can’t do anything about SOPA or PIPA. Yoroshiku ne (I’m counting on you guys).
Australia, Finland and The Netherlands (since 2 days…) already have domain blacklists for ISPs.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is based in USA. What a shame for me, SOPA writers have been inspired by the French laws around HADOPI
What a bad piece of news
I think everyone here understands the importance of the internet. It’s been relatively free since its inception, and governments not too concerned about it. But in the past decade it has grown in importance, to a point for majority of the people out there the internet is a large part of their daily lives.
So, it’s mainstream now, it’s what people use daily, ordinary people, not just nerds in their parents basement.
Government tries to control everything, because there always exist individuals in government that think they should dictate and control everything around you.
I’m a big Ron Paul supporter, and I think government should be as miniscule as possible, out of the daily lives of people.
The internet has not grown to the revolutionary thing it is today because of government involvement, it’s done so because the government was absent. But with increased bureaucracy, laws, regulations, etc. the internet will become stunted, and I fear for its future.
America technically “owns” the internet, this is why this law is so important. They can shut down a domain of a foreign site servicing people in another country, just because some fascists laws in America.
But what I fear exactly is a “internet split”, partitioning of the internet into regions. Look at China and their great firewall, look at Iran with their “Shalal network” (or whatever), Australia even. Perhaps the EU will create a european based internet free of American influence, but under control of brussel beurocrats (no better).
The regulations and laws in different regions are already setting up the scenario for this to happen, a collision course.
If you wanted to visit a site in a different region you’d have to do some special things, not sure how that would end up, but the internet as we know it will cease to exist.
The internet has been a independent world of its own, but it looks like national governments are trying to crack down on that, imposing their rule over it.
Don’t think this issue is really going to go away now that DNS blocking has become common. A better way to protect the internet is to fix the above vulnerability and move to some sort of decentralised DNS system.
I want to participate but dunno know to do it with my weebly site, which has 3 strayed visitors daily ;D
well, twitter can make it.
Slightly OT: The Stop SOPA banner is growing, and the cancer ribbon is blocking the Home and Help buttons… >_> I also realized why everyone is so slow. It’s 21:00 here, but it’s morning/mid day in America now, right?
The banner is alive? kinda horror. My english is not that good so, what is the diff between SOPA and PIPA?
It’s not a cancer ribbon. Seriously.
AIDS ribbon, more clear, sympathy symbol.
Okay then, the goth sister of the Pink Ribbon or whatever you call it?
It’s a ribbon for all kinds of ‘bad circumstances’, I’d point you to the wikipedia page, but, you know.

I have a school project due tomorrow O:<
If wikipedia is your primary source of information, you have bigger problems.
As long as you check a secondary source as well (as simple as googleing the info you find), Wikipedia can be an amazing and valuable resource.
