Start to make a game?

Hello everybody,

First of all my name is Jordi and I am a programming starter. I can program Java and I use Eclipse for that. Now next year I am going to study Major Game Development in Belgium. But I want to get a headstart. I started looking for tutorials LWJGL but couldn’t find any beginners tutorials. Maybe someone here on the forum knows a site where they show you everything step by step? Or are there any videos about this subject? Please can someone help me?!

Are there any programs you guys use for designing maps and landscapes and characters? ;D

Thanks!

I will start with programming a 2D game. Are there any programs to make items for ingame and characters? And maybe any tools I can use?

For first game? Make graphics using Paint, maybe with little help of Gimp.

You can use LibGDX instead of ‘pure’ LWJGL.

What is LibGDX?

Its a library for game programming that works for pc and android. It is higher level but you can get in to the gritty details if desired.

Do I have to install LWJGL first?

No its not depending on lwjgl, its an stand-alone library.

No, it does depend on LWJGL (the desktop launcher launches LWJGL app) but it ships with it (I think).

Here is an easy setup guide

Libgdx is a game framework that will let you easily port to android and html5. I recommend starting with it. It will be a little steep at first but it is loads better then Java2D and much less complicate then straight opengl through lwjgl.

Just a fair warning: When you study game dev, they will most likely not teach you java - its not the default choice for making games at all

Why does this thread give me a Malware Warning in Google Chrome?!

Another dodgy site hosting an avatar is my guess. I have had information security come over and almost take away my PC because I was browsing this site at work and various forum avatars were firing IDS alerts. Now that I’m on a less touchy network, I dont’ risk that anymore, but I ought to just block the forum avatars entirely on my end. ABP on firefox isn’t smart enough to block by CSS context tho, and I’m too lazy to whip up any greasemonkey scripts :stuck_out_tongue:

Figured it out, it’s Mac70’s avatar. Mac70, I advise you to use this version: http://i.imgur.com/aM0Ammd.jpg (I reuploaded it on Imgur)
