Spammers Topic Targetting

In an attempt to cope with the my frustration at the amount of spam this morning I’ve been trying to work out patterns for the attacks. This one for instance only hit certain forums, whys that? The services offered seem to be pretty random also?

Kev

Hm. What you can see on some forums is some spam protection, which ensures that there need to be at least x seconds between posts, but that can get quite annoying if you use tabs and write several replys at the same time.

But looking at that recent attack… I think it would be good to ensure that you can only start a new topic every x minutes (5 mins should be just fine). AFAICT it shouldnt affect usual posting behaviour, but it would slow down attacks like the last one (and it would also annoy crossposters quite a bit).

Well, either way… we need some more “super admins” (people who can delete posts/users).

We’ve been here before tho haven’t we? Theres a distinct lack of support for global admins (other than ChrisM). Maybe because the site is Sun affiliated and it’d be a potential to abuse. It’d also be tricky to work out who should be doing it.

Kev

I believe the casual posters on this forum could all be trusted.
I don’t believe anyone would abuse such a position.
This is 1 out of 2 forums I know that members are mature enough, so that abuse and stupidity are non-existent.

maybe if only users with more than 0 posts could start new threads…

btw that last attack was particulary anoying

Why not increase the security on registration. Either require a validation email or entering of characters from a twisted graphic. This will keep most robots away.

Or a waiting period of at least 24 hours for new members.

Refuse to start a new topic with the exact same subject in a set amount of time. Couple that with email activation by the moderator/adminstrator, all should be well…
