some whining...

Just want to whine a litte, maybe have some cheese with it.
I have completed my engine and server code for a 3D space sim, though all you can do is create a player, log in and fly around. Now SGS is out(I was away from the boards and missed the actual release date) and I am left staring at the wall as to whether to re-code things to use the SGS or stick with my server code taht uses MySQL and my own objects. doh!

Then, someone asked me to build them an Medieval RPG like game and I already have one in Java2D and converted it to LWJGL. I am now wondering if it should be 3D but have no (none, zero, zip) modelling skills (or modelling software). I am not sure if I like my isometric pixel art and love the NWN style view. Oh, and do I use the SGS or not?? LOL

And my coffe is cold and my cigar went out and have to walk to the other end of the office for more matches.

EVE online has been fun for my 14 day trial, but I don’t wnat to pay to play it…

MASS Effect is only for the xbox and I dont own one.

Come on, you did some big job by finishing your engine.

ANd for the coffee, just get a new cup in the kitchen and with the cigar…leave them. You will save much money to spend for more coffee

Anyway, go with it and be fine. As long the 2D pixelart looks fine it is ok. Hey, sometimes I play Dungeon Keeper and or either older ones like “Kaiser Deluxe”

First and most important - Congrats on the progress you made!! ;D For many of us that have trouble squeezing in our passion with the reality that surrounds us your “problems” are something we envy. ::slight_smile:

Second, coffee has a minimum life span of 24 hours ( 36 if in a closed container ). Just pour some warm coffee in the cup to augment if you don’t enjoy drinking it room temp and you’re all set. Howvever, cold or warm does not effect the caffine molecules in any significant manner. Of course, if you happen to be one of those people that contaminate their coffee with sugar, cream, etc then there may be additional restrictions which I am unfamiliar with.

Regarding SGS: If you’re game is not targeted to be a (M)MOG then SGS may not be appropriate. In the case of your space sim, if it’s just a few players teaming up “LAN style” then SGS may not add anything for you. However, if the space sim is build around differnt planetary systems that allows players to travel between them, dogfight, trade, do missions, etc then it may be worth looking into. Likewise with your RPG game ( persistent-world w/ lots of players = good SGS candidate ).

SGS, 3D graphics, 5.1 surround sound, etc are all just options. If their use does not directly add benefit to your vision then they are not needed for you in that case. Rather than asking if you should be using a technology and try to mold your game around it, just look at the definition of your game and see if the technology is needed. If you never specified a need for true 3D graphics or terrain then why distract yourself with 3D?

Uh huh. These are enabling technologies to make some stuff easier… nothing is required. All the player cares about is end expereince, however you get there.

And I personally do think there is life left in good games built on good 2D engines.

Now ist MY turn to whine…

My 2 ghz AMD isnt enough processor to run Oblivion. Event the menus chug.

WHat the hell is with that??

Should run fine. What graphics card and how much RAM do the PC have?
On my AMD Athlon XP 2400+ with Radeon 9600XT and 768MB RAM it is all ok with reduced settings and some cg features disabled.

thanks guys…I think I am going to “lean” in the SGS direction and give it a look-see. Anyway, the cigars are free and I got a hot-plate for the coffee…LOL

Jeff (and others) should expect lots of questions, though. ;D

A gig main ram. An Nvidia 5700.

I get such slow frame rate on tthe 2D menus that they are unusuable.

Anf im running at a really low res, something like 640x480…

FSync disabled? Latest patch installed? Maybe its just the detonator/forceware driver.
AA, FSAA , AF disabled?
