Just curious. Who out there is building a demo/test/game with the Project Darkstar tech? If so, any updates you would care to share?

Heh…i was so close to convincing my boss to build our game using this tech…but i guess it is 1.5 and our proj requirement is 1.4…
I suppose you can easily build client with 1.4 if needed (and I doubt that you truly have to limit to 1.4 only on the server side).
I would be more concerned with investing into first alpha release technology than 1.5 requirement…
Hey all! Noob to the forums. Be gentle
I met up with the DS team at GDC, and was ranting and raving about the Citaga Project that I am working on with a team at my school. It’s an unreal 2k4 total conversion mod with stats-tracking (RPG style), and local game serving options. More information available at www.citaga.com
I’m really excited to implement PD, and … well … rock on!

need to test slices before i can convince myself to move over to Darkstar. even if its one or two only, its sort
of the main selling point in may main. also need to know how much pain the cost is going to be. apache licence!?!
might, attempt, to build a libairy/extension/interface(not sure how to classify it) for it as soon as I have time.
Hmm…are u sure…we tried compiling some code with 1.4 compliance, but we got compliance errors…
Out of curioisity… why is your project requirement 1.4?
There is nothign in the client APi that is inrherently 1.5… we just in general really like the added type safety and cool looping.
But we could certainly create a 1.4 safe interface if there was a clear need…
We ve done some research about jre installation here in Serbia…most users have 1.4 installed and we want to enable them to play our game as easy as possibe(no further download, since many dialupers).
Personally i dont agre with my boss on this- i wanted it to be 1.5…but i lost the battle…
I really cant understand this argument of your boss - they might have installed mainly 1.4 yet - but when is your game to be released?- At that time it will be most likely 1.5, I guess - and isnt a technology, which might reduce hosting costs later on (because it enables server providers to host several games with SGS technology more efficiently than today on a server-cluster), a better choice than any proprietary solution, seen from an economical point of view?-
Ragosch
Ragosh, u have a point.
But are game is to be released in a week or 2…
Thats y we are aiming for 1.4 platform.
I’m wondering if downloading the 1.5 jre would really be such a hassle
for the customers as many imagine. The JRE download size is not as large as
some think - take a look:

Also, I think our deployment team will soon be releasing a deployment sdk with
all the stuff (ActiveX control, javascript, etc) for you to detect if the customer
has the right JRE installed, and redirect to java.com for online installation
if that’s not the case.
Thanks,
Dmitri
Any step between a punter and playing the game is a step at which a certain (large) percentage give up and go somewhere else. That’s a fact. So just bundle the entire JRE in the game.

Tnx for the info. I ve already seen some javascript snipets which detect jre instalation…
And Cas- our game wont be larger than 1 mb-packaging 7 mgs of jre would be quite a waste…and burden.
Plz check it out www.pixelppl.com/football.php
Nah, you’re just uncessarily limiting your audience to the rather small subset of people with Webstart on their machines. Forget about your individual ideas of what a burden might be - on broadband 7mb isn’t far off 1mb.
Cas
You are absolutely right!
But here in Serbia, there are still many users on dialup… and we must take care of them too…
I ll keep in mind all your tips…i m sure we will use them in near future…
Tnx.
