So this is why we love retro!

I AM IN NO WAY SAYING THAT I MADE THIS.

I love this series. ;D

But I think that they failed to think that some kids that were not born when these games were made in the AAA industry. What do you think?

I don’t know. I guess “retro” is relative. Before SNES we had NES, before NES we had Atari 2600 before Atari 2600 we had something called the “Magnavox Odyssey” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_games).

Like the video mentions it’s not uncommon for one to once in a while ponder the early days when things were “simpler”. That too is relative. Most people in the world didn’t have a simple childhood.

There are many new things happening around the world that has never happened before (old things too, history buffs :)). I think the generation of nerds the video speaks of is a unique phenomena I like to call the “1st world western 80’s generation”.

I dunno, I still play my Double Dragons and Yoshi’s worlds once in a while

It’s not uncommon for people to assume they represent hundreds of millions of people.

kinda disagree with some stuff he says.
I always valued story and characters more than anything, that feel of immersion is great. Even in 16bit I liked the involved RPGs the most, emotionally

also, one reason I like retro games is challenge. just like with dark souls, old games offer a good challenge because they were shorter and stuff.
today its all auto pilot.

needless to say the amount of realistic war simulations make me sick because for one thing I enjoy entertainment to get away from that stuff and secondly because they are boring as shit, still doing the same thing wolfenstein3D did =/

I think, what sometimes annoys people in modern high-end-graphics games is the lack of personal freedom to interpret what you see and hear. Games with lots of small integrated videos and (too) advanced graphics does not challenge you to use your imagination to fill the gaps between the pixels. There is a reason why children like seemingly obscure thoughts, worlds, environments. They play with the very basics of such environments themselves instead of using realistic settings and then changing some of it’s parameters (like shooters, which tell a story of warfare). Fortunately, there are game developers today who produce crazy games made from obscure concepts which provide a different challenge from just knowing when to shoot whom but they are less advertised/“less public”. Using your imagination in a different way, instead of watching a more or less interactive movie unfolding right before your eyes, makes “retro” interesting.

the thing i like about classic FPSes is they’re more fast-paced. and you can rocket jump.
