Sneak Peek - IMI racing demo for GDC

All,

Shawn and I were having a blast playing an early build of IMI’s racing game that will be shown in the Sun booth (#1510) at GDC in a week and so I thought I would capture a bit of video of the game and post the link here. Now here is what is really cool. The game is running on the Project Darkstar server technology and we had it up and running across the open web today and everythign ROCKS. Stable and solid, the tech just works and Shawn didn’t really have to do anything to get networking implemented in the game. Just drop in the PD code and BOOM! off you go now

I should also point out that the game is done in Java3D :):)

Now, the link (NOTE: Added a lo-rez version):

P.S. Shawn informed me that the level is not complete and they are adding half-pipes and translucent surfaces
P.P.S. Unlike the “famous” F1 racer from several years ago, THIS game will be available on the www.projectdarkstar.com site the day the site goes live (22nd). The single player version will be posted first, with the networked version to follow shortly thereafter.

project darkstar sounds really good, game looks good too, but just confused at how that character is controlling the vechicle with no hands

Since when was that a good thing?

Ahh yeah, first, the characters have minimal animtion right now, sorry
BUT, by design they pilot the gyros just like the Green Goblin does in Spiderman comics. (Which in our game we call Schmagic™!)

I can only download 16.3 MB of the 33.2 MB and then it halts… every time.

Really? Working for the 3 people I have on IM just dld and it is fine…

-Chris

It worked for me as well. Very cool.

Since people have started to notice Tribal trouble… 8)

“Oddlabs has chosen use Java to build Tribal Trouble. They are utilizing the Light Weight Java Game Library and OpenGL to write the graphics engine, and it is a success in my view. Gone are the days when Java meant slow and clunky. The graphics in Tribal Trouble are as smooth and fast as any other game out there. The use of Java for the game means that it has been very easy for Oddlabs to develop the game for the Macintosh, Windows, and Linux simultaneously. This gives the game an even wider appeal, and since it is using the same code base, multiplayer online games are possible between any of the three platforms seamlessly.”

Huh? Tribal Trouble doesn’t use java3d.

I think Jeff means Java in general

Demo looks nice - great artwork.

I’m still sceptical of how DS is going to solve all game networking scenarios in one fail swoop… but I’m looking forward to finding out

Kev

The “DS” solves all networking by eliminating networking altogether since the unit has two screens and is very mobile, also with a stylus, everyone will have one and…
Oh wrong DS…

All I’m going to say is - comedy - genius.

Kev

ahah laugh of the day

Excellent demo. Hats off to the IMI team! Maybe you can give us some background information Shawn?

Yes the IMI game seems promising. And I’m eager to know more about Project D.S.

Works now for me too… not sure what was going on before.

just look here: http://www.projectdarkstar.com/
