Slow

Extremely slow forum.

Where’s the action?

Is anybody at all using Java3D?

I believe Java3D is virtually dead… I trashed my Java3D specification book last week. Xith3D is the best competitive replacement as far as I know.

I thought Cosmic Birdie or whatever it’s called uses Java3D…

I’m still reading but I know how to do most of what I need to with J3D so I will mostly try to answer questions.

tbh, when I get around to writing my classic game (which has kind of slipped into something I’m starting to do now instead of a random idea) I’m going to use the monkey-engine for the 3d bit cos it gives me more stuff I need on a plate without having to work for it. As my general game concept is stupidly ambitions I am quite happy to let the engine do as much as possible…

What makes you think J3D is “virtually dead”?

Anyways, I am using it in a game that I am building …

There are some games out there already that use it like flyingguns

I didn’t intend to offense Java3D or people who are using it. I myself used it for quite some time. But after I heard that they dont maintain it further and fancy new scene graphs arised such as Xith and jME I began to think that the days of Java3D are counted. In addition, as uj said, this forum has “no action” anymore… But I am happy if you prove me wrong. What is your game like?

As far as I understand Java3D is being activly developed again. It did go into a holding patern a couple of years ago, but since then has been open sourced and development has picked up (I believe), I think there have been alot of performance increases since then too (one of the biggest critisisms of it iirc) and there is also a jogl render now.

You could try looking here http://forums.java.net/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=70 too.

Hi all,

Java3D is definately very active. There has been a 1.4 release and the 1.5 release is in beta and almost ready for release. There are many new features and more are already planned for in the 1.6 roadmap. Check out https://java3d.dev.java.net/ and the best forum is the one mentioned before http://forums.java.net/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=70 .

Dave.

Yes very much so and that’s why I found it strange that this forum wasn’t more active but maybe the simple reason is that Java3D isn’t used that much for gaming.

Untrue. Public sourced would be the correct way to say it.

javagaming is not where the internet ends … http://forums.java.net/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=70

Almost ;D

EDIT: Or maybe is it where it begins ?
