Single atom transistors!

Just read this and it amazed me, this is our future.

That is really small! D: this is amazing indeed. How do they produce something this small? :o

Is that real? Seriously? Where’s the text at the end that says “This is a joke, and you all fell for it!”? Oh god, I feel like the world’s going to end. I’m going to bed.

The fact that it needs to be cooled to -200 degrees Celsius is enough to make me not hold my breath…

Yeah same, i reckon it’ll be a while before consumers will see anything even remotely like this.

WTF! This is the physical end of Moore’s Law! Holy mother of god…

However, the ball dropped when I read that it needs to be 77 Kelvin…that’s gonna take a while before such consumer computers will be built

"Klimeck says. “We can’t make it smaller than this.”
Wait for one century.

I bet they will find a way to shrink it by using smaller atoms. When we reach hydrogen, we might have a problem. But then again, we’d be surpassing human brains processing power long before that, so it’s unlikely humans are still around to care.

it is n’t that big of a problem for moors law,
heard of the 3D chips intel is experimenting with at the moment?

they try not only to put the transistors on a 2D plane but to also stack them on each other.

and with this and the atom sized transistors I think it will be quite a while until moors law won’t hold any more.

And also, with atom sized transistors, there will be some quantum effects which can be experiment with.
And when we get bigger quantum processors  -> singularity

I’m pretty sure the chilly -200C cooling required is something that you’re not going to get away from. Making a computer is difficult when all your logic gates shake themselves apart from heat.

And what happens when you get some Read/Write access error, due to some bad multi-thread programming. Could you accidentally split the atom?

Oh god. We better kill the person who discovered how to create a single atom transistor, before everyone’s home computers become atomic bombs!

LOL XD ;D

To get atomic bomb, it’s not just an atom hitting other or splitting. You need high amount of force in right direction to hit a structure.

I don’t think you could accidentally split an atom, and ReBirth’s kinda right, you need lots of force to actually do it anyway.

Yeah, it’s not like you split atoms when you break a glass.

I’m going to go break glass over and over until I split an atom. Just to prove you wrong!

That was meant as a joke, actually, I think everyone understood that. I was going to reference Microsoft in the joke, but figured not everyone has the hatred that I do towards them.

The look on your face when you actually do it… oh, wait…

Yeah I hope I was wrong too :stuck_out_tongue:
