I have updated NeHe Lesson 6 on the WiKi to use DevIL to load images. It is very few lines and should be easy to understand.
Excellent! I had no idea it would be so easy!
I’ve never even heard of DevIL until the newest LWJGL release. This will surely make my clunky custom texture loader obsolete.
Great job Captain Jester- and great job LWJGL team!
what is this “DevIL” i’ve been hearing about so much on the lwjgl scene and why would i use it?
i’ve tried a google search but it gave me results about something else ;D
DevIL = OpenIL = Open Image Library = http://openil.sourceforge.net/
no longer called openil, because of SGI complaints
ok, its an image library ???
hmm, GAH still don’t get why that would be useful, can’t u do image loading with java?
First of all - take a look at what it can do:
http://openil.sourceforge.net/docs/function_index.htm
Secondly, yes you can do it in Java - however it’s much faster and simpler to use DevIL - and you’re free of awt.
[sligthly offtopic]
Not exactly related to OpenGL, but is anyone used DevIL in Java2D applications?
Say, you want to rotate and scale sprites heavily on game rendering loops. Is is possible to use DevIL image buffers with BufferedImage instances?
