Should I let java4k die?

We’re days from it…

Maybe one last (sans applet) hurrah?

what do you mean? is the domain name expiring or something?

Well, which do you mean: the contest or the website? The topic title suggests the former, the message body the latter… which is a bit confusing to me, as you wonder whether to let something die that you gracefully ‘put to death’ a year ago.

I’m sure somebody is willing to take over hosting the site, if that is what you mean…

If you mean the contest: what has changed since you decided to pull the plug last year? Surely the support for applets has only gotten worse the last 12 months.

I tried to get another contest off the ground after Java4K was terminated, but reallife kicked in. No time whatsoever. :emo:

I’d be willing to do this, because even though J4K is obviously dead, that doesn’t mean the games and source code to said games have to die too. :point:

Yea, the domain is expiring. I have a backup of website just in case. But a few days from now nothing will be up. No big deal, as nobody can run the games anymore.

If, and only if, there are no suitable volunteers, please extend the domain registration, I will reimburse you. Once that is done, we can take some time to transfer ownership of the domain & website.

IMHO java4k.com should stay online if only for historical reasons.

FWIW, a quick look at archive.org suggests that they’ve got the site backed up, so there would still be something available online.

I second that opinion.

Isn’t there a way to wrap applets so they can run as stand-alone java apps? That way they can at least be played.

I personally end up modifying the Java4k games I find interesting to run as java apps anyway (I like tinkering with the source, even if I have to decompile it).

The domainname has expired, but the hoster is keeping it around for a bit. Please renew and transfer the domain to somebody - my offer still stands, I’ll reimburse you.

if for some reason you don’t want take money from Riven
I can find 10-20$ for domain name ^^

How is that even a scenario. :clue: Oh well.

We will rescue it

That’s great news!

Please renew as soon as possible, before you lose ownership. The company you registered the domain with might take ownership and put it on the market, at which point the asking price will most likely be a few hundred bucks.

The domain has been renewed for one more year, the site should return to normal soon. Apo has come forth offering his help, I will work with him to move the site to him.
