It should be noted this is not Markus’ next game. It’s Mojang’s next game, being developed by JahKob.
Not that this is a bad thing at all, it just means the game literally has nothing to do with Minecraft or Markus’ previous work.
I’ve played an M:tG variant which involved advancing over a grid. It was several years ago, so I can’t remember which it was. It can certainly work as a concept.
I’m not keen on this card creasing mechanic mentioned in the article, though.
If it works well I will play it. I’ve been longing for a good online version of Magic that doesn’t charge me money for booster decks.
True, I remembered that when I had posted and turned of the computer
That’s not to say that Markus will not be used as an inspiration and commentator to the work of JahKob though

From an interview:
[quote]Will that be Flash?
No, it’s not going to be Flash, but we have talked about having an open API so anyone can create their own client, since everything is going to be server-side anyway.
The problem with Flash is that no-one really takes it seriously. Plus of course, the performance issues. So we’re going to look beyond that. We’re probably leaning towards Unity. Unity has some added features, and performance-wise it outruns Flash. Plus, if you want to use 3D or particle effects and so on…

Unity3D is a very strong choice these days, so no surprise there. Would be nice if they also supported Java (but guess Mono isn’t too different, so not that big of a deal).
There’s definitely scope for hybrid board/card/computer games - I’ve been playing Space Alert! recently and it’s an awesome game but it’s begging for a computer to automate some of the book-keeping. Letting you play with people over the internet for when you can’t find enough willing victims is a bonus too.
But as a collectable card game I’m less interested. Magic: The Gathering and the like all seem deliberately engineered to force you to spend loads of money on card packs in the vain hope of getting a ‘rare’ card. However good the game might actually be it feels like it’s being driven by extracting as much money out of every player as possible. (Also the reason I stopped playing Games Workshop games).
Looks like they’ll be going up against PoxNora (again written in Java) and now owned by Sony Online Entertainment.
Cool stuff, looking forward to see how this plays.
It hasn’t got the community networking that MineCraft has tho, unless they let players build their own cards and auction them or something.
Wow, that guy who made poxnora was on these forums too. Congrats to him getting bought out by sony. Pretty cool!
poxnora looks pretty cool. It is all Java?
i did not try because I don’t want to use my facebook id and they don’t support openid
