Screen resoloution

Are all cards capable of 640*480? I thought a low resolution like this would be pretty much universal, but on some machines it seems to remain at a higher resolution with the game graphics (UridiumGL!) lurking in the corner. I got a mail from someone with this problem who is running this:-

P3 2.8
Sapphire 9800Pro 128Mb
1Gb RAM
DirectX9
XP Pro SP2

What should I consider for making sure the correct resolution is set? UridiumGL uses LWJGL0.8.

Is that perhaps caused by an LCD display which refuses to rescale the image, rather than an uncooperative graphics card?

Sounds likely.

Graphic cards can basically spit out any resolution (up to their limit). I added a bunch of strange resolutions to mine (like 608x448, 768x448, 800x768, 500x480, 625x600 and 856x480 [don’t ask ;)]).

These settings are stored in the registry and 640x480 is always there. Therefore most games startup with that as default (eg Q3).

Manufacturers just can’t omit 640x480, because it would totally break compatibility with almost any 3d game out there.

So either it’s a LCD wich refuses to rescale (some do) or the driver (registry settings actually) are broken.

I had the same problem with UridiumGL when I tried it, and I aint got an LCD display. I have got a 9600XT card though, so could be a Radeon driver issue?

Happened on my Nvidia laptop too. However, it doesn’t happen with any of my games, so something else is up.
