RPG Game Demo

Hi,

We have been developing an RPG game for MIDP 1.0 phones. The idea is to make a fairly complete, Ultima-style RPG for mobile phones. Things have been going pretty well, so we are ready to really make a big push on it. However, we have limited access to phones no which to test it out. All of our testing has been on a SE T610. We hear that this is one of the worst J2ME phones, and indeed we have needed to employ many work-arounds to get things to operate properly. We hope that the experience on other phones is at least as good and hopefully better. We want to be sure that it works on many different phones before we take it to the next level.

So, we have made a demo version of the game available for users to try out. It is pretty basic at this time, but you can walk around the maps and get in to combat situations, pick up and use treasure, etc.

Get it here:

or here is the JAR file (some service providers block JAD files):

Download that straight to your phone and enjoy! Let us know if it works on your phone.

Haven’t tested it yet, but suffice to say your market is rather limited in the EU because of the jar size - you need to stay under 64 kB to support Nokia Series 40 which is still the dominant phone.

kB not kb!

Is that 64k limit because of the OTA delivery method or because of the phone’s memory limit?

It seems that in the US people aren’t using OTA to deliver the apps, but it also seems that no one is buying java apps for their phone…

The 64 kB limit is imposed by the phone - they’re increasing the size to 128 on newer phones (some don’t even have a limit) - but basically if you’re not supporting Nokia series 40 (64 kB heapsize, 210 kB heap & 20kB RMS) then you’re missing a whole lot of people.

My nokia 6800 has a size limit of 40kb for any incoming applications :frowning: Even through infrared transfer from my computer.

Works on my Samsung A620/VGA1000. I had to download the jar to my computer and then use http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php as your .jad wasn’t being accepted by my phone. =) My girlfriend is gonna love this game. I’ll never be able to use my phone now when she’s around. lol.
