Rover Run (Offroad Driving Game)

I have been working on a little project for a month or so, and thought I would share it.
Its a Land Rover based off-road driving game which uses jME and OdeJava.

If you would like to give it a try, you can download the full or webstart version at
http://www.roverrun.com.

I hope you find it enjoyable

Very cool stuff,

Very similar to something I was hacking on, but this is much further ahead.

One problem I see is that the car seems to be flickering back and forwards a bit. I seem to recall a similar problem I had in the olden days with Java3D. Since the rendering is going “flat out” I got this because sometimes images was rendered between the time you move the camera and the car. You probably see this very clearly when looking at the car from the side going at high speeds. Don’t know much about jME, but I hope that there is a way to control when to render the screen, so just do all updates to the world and then render, and this problem should go away.

I also thought that the Rover was a bit too easy to tilt over to the side when driving on flat land, but that is maybe just getting used to… I’d like to be able to get a lot softer suspension/longer travel. Changing the settings didn’t seem to do all that much. It is just too “bouncy”. A damper to suspension is maybe what’s needed. Or maybe just add a dunebuggy? Nice framerate at mostly ~70fps (sometimes drops to ~40) on 1.8GHz lap.

Love that you can break a few things of the car

You should maybe move the webstart link, so that it is a bit more visible. As it is now you really have to look for it.

It is quite similar to “1nsane”. Great game. You should really add Lan capability and this one will be a hit.

Enjoyed it quite a bit and just a little bit of tuning will make this game great.

After 15 to 20 minutes of loading… I just closed it.

Very nice game, had fun driving around.
