Rheo - Space Explorer. Would love some testers

Hey all. Been making Java games for some time now, and for some reason never thought to join a community. So I was very excited when I chanced upon the website, and would love to have some people try out my game. (in the meantime I’ll be checking out all these other awesome projects I see posted).

The game works like this. There is a main map which is randomly generated. Your goal is to find and destroy 10 evil bases scattered throughout. Of course to do this you’ll have to upgrade your ship, using your winnings from small skirmishes and other events.

Oh, and I better not forget - the controls. WASD or Arrow Keys to move, Q and E to turn, and Space Bar to shoot. Combat is tricky at first - there are several different movement styles, but I recommend just using W to move forward, and Q/E to turn, no need for strafing. (There are cheats as well. I ask you don’t use them until you’ve given normal play a test. “1” for reveal map, “2” for money).

Frame rate (at the side of the screen), should be a steady 46-48. Please report what it is for you. I’d also like to know what the load times are like.

Thanks to anyone who gives it a try

(If 0.5 bugs out, try 0.4)

Hi Crynth! Welcome to the forum! I have only played your game a little, but I thought it was fun. The exploration part makes the game exciting. Didn’t find any bugs (Windows 7, Firefox 3.6). A few things I think could be improved though: During the combats I miss some kind of indication that my ship was hit. The AI of the enemies could be better. Also I think even more “events” that you can run into would make it more fun.

Framerate was 48.

Welcome to the forums!

That is a really nice and entertaining game. My contructive critism is about the controls - it’s really hard when the keys get mixed up when your turning.

Thanks to both of you

@Mads Try only using “Q”, “W”, and “E”. Then it feels like top-down GTA movement.

@fruitmaze In combat, the ship lights up with a shield when hit. Do you not see a red flash? Regarding events, I doubt you’ve bumped into any strange fog, mysterious ruins, or the travelling trader yet. However, I do intend to add more regular type things to the main map (its hard to think of things that happen in space). I like having stupid AI for grunts - more enemy types to come.

I’m back  The controls went way better this time :stuck_out_tongue: I was almost able to kill a green mob on wave 3 at some base…
I can also confirm of the bug that causes the red circle to not show upon being hit - it mainly occours in asteriod fields.

Cannot wait to see more content

I can’t reproduce the bug, hmmm. Any specific times it occurs? PS - Don’t attack the bases right off. You’ll need an upgraded ship.

Any thoughts on what I should add next?

Nice little game. One bug that I was able to reproduce. After you die, the red flash indicating a hit does not show up on remaining lives.

Thanks Terminalord. Found and fixed the bug
