The old forum software is still up and answering to the outside world. It comes up with the admin page, but I really can’t see a need for it to be around at all. Would be better if it could be removed completely and setup the webserver to automatically redirect to the front page of the new forum URL.
What would be really nice would be redirects for all the old links. It’s sad that all the old threads I have documented in the Xith3D wiki/faqs are now broken :’( Unfortunately by the look of it the ID numbers have changed so this won’t be easy. A compromise could be to leave the old board running in a locked state with a message saying to use the new boards.
I do appreciate having the new board though, thanks Chris.
Cheers,
Will.
I have dozens of bookmarks, probably a hundred even, for the “old” forums. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one - many sites link to JGO forums that no longer exist :(. A URL is for life, not just for christmas.

I’m more inclined to think of forums as ephemeral things, and think that any information that is important enough to keep should be extracted and published elsewhere. What’s the point in linking directly to a document that can be edited at any time? Your link to an interesting point on the validity of XML in a resource-starved environment may, a couple of weeks down the line, just be a link to the text MY HOVERCRAFT IS FULL OF EELS.
Yes, and that’s why I bookmarked them, to come back later when I had time and do that. /me looks around to see if anyone is spending hours a week at the moment actually doing the above described.
So, you don’t bookmark webpages anywhere on the web? Come on, even news sites regularly edit their own articles. Nothing is static.
Only on a crummy forum with bad community mojo :P.
Or, say, one that has changed software in the past, breaking all external links, and has been threatening to do it again for the past couple of years?
On a related note, how about getting a proper URL for these forums? www.java-gaming.org might do a handy redirect but it ends up at a (highly unprofessional, IMHO) http://192.18.37.44/forums URL.
Saving is an option, but it is a personal thing. I prefer publicly linking in the Wiki and docs (in fact I have a wiki entry named “InterestingThreads” which is now useless).
The look of the IP does not worry me per say, but what worries me now is that the IP will change and break all the new links :-S
