Reduce Forum Count

It’s possible we could just bin some forums atm,

JMonkeyEngine - they have their own forums, and there is very little traffic. Additionally it’s singling out particular libraries as somehow special when all should hold the same status.

Xith3D - see above but more so because there’s even less traffic.

LWJGL + JOGL - are both now open source projects. One single forum Java OpenGL might suffice better. Low traffic in both forums and there are other bindings out there.

JOAL - Java OpenAL, could use it for facets of LWJGL then.

Java 2D - Should probably be 2D Graphics since there are a wealth of 2D java libraries now (including my own)

Java 3D - Should probably be 3D Graphics since there are a wealth of 3D java libraries now.

Probably posted this before, even on the same thread, but the discussion does seem to have died as IDO mentioned.

Yeah I agree to this, some of those options don’t really need there own forum and therefore can be merged. Well at least for the libraries that is. Android/JavaFX probably be better on there own.

For what it’s worth, the only part of the forum I even look at is the Recent Posts box down at the bottom :-
Far too many forums with far too little traffic.

Merging the forums would make it difficult to impossible to filter out information for JOGL respectively LWJGL. We might as well just remove them altogether? How about reducing the forum count on the top level as suggested, but keeping the existing forums as subforums in the new forums?

Please no. I understand your position, some problems are related to OpenGL rather than a particular binding but as far as I know, LWJGL is more than an OpenGL binding. On my view, merging the both sections is a bad idea.

Questioning relating to the other parts of LWJGL (sound/input) would belong in the appropriate other collapsed forum. So OpenAL questions (be there JOAL or LWJGL OpenAL) would go into the Java OpenAL forum (since the chances if you know the answer for one, you’ll know it for the other). Ditto with input, LWJGL uses JInput so it’s questions could go in Java Native Input (rather than a forum specifcially for JInput which gets little traffic).

Ok… I don’t want to be polemical but some bugs are particular to specific bindings. Anyway, we need a place to discuss about these bugs too without mixing the both.

IMO binding specific bug questions are rare and really belong on the bindings web site or bug tracking system instead of a third party java gaming forum.

you could just say in your title “LWJGL …” or “JOGL …”

LWJGL has its own forum to deal with binding specific bug questions whereas this kind of forum is here for JOGL and in my humble opinion, we (JOGL users) need this kind of forum here, we don’t have enough resource now to create a separate forum. Therefore, I still disagree, please don’t merge JOGL and LWJGL sections.

Edit.: actually we have a forum for binding specific questions on Project Kenai but I don’t know if lots of JOGL users know where it is:
http://projectkenai.com/projects/jogl/forums/forum

The thing is that 99% of the posts in the JOGL section are for general OpenGL questions. It’s very rare when I see anything pertaining specifically to JOGL or LWJGL. So I don’t see how combining the two will inhibit anything.

+1. Again!

agreed, also since the forums aren’t very active, even if there is a binding specific question, it should be easy for users of either binding to find and answer them.

As long as we’re discussing forum restructuring…

it would also be interesting to draw out the Java4K forum onto the main page when it’s in season. It is sort of hidden as a footnote “child board” now. :’(

Just Do It.

There is no pleasing everyone, and the majority agrees.

It seems like we’re waiting for someone with TEH POWERS to do it…? Or …?

We’re waiting for this guy:
