Raspberry Pi doubles RAM to 512MB

And thusly now much more of a contender for running Java. If only Oracle would hurry up with the hardfloat JDK7.

Cas

Really cool that they’ve removed its biggest limitation.

Some news on Java’s support for floating point stuff on the PI here.

Damn, and I’ve only just got my 256Mb Pi delivered.

Haven’t done anything useful with it yet mind… I should really come up with a project for it.

Also, I totally recommend Pi Bow as a funky case.

I have one too and I need a case. Might consider that one. =S

It’s so gay =D

Great news from Oracle too then. I will probably not need to upgrade to the 512mb version any time soon as I’m still hanging about waiting for a JVM anyway; also I have a feeling I can get decent games running in under 128mb anyway.

Love the PiBow, though at £12.95 they can do one  Maybe a fiver would be a bit more attractive.

Cas

wait, you can assemble your Raspberry Pi? ??? ???

This sounds awesome. Now I will definitely have to get one, and that funky case is totally me. I can hardly wait for christmas.

It’s almost like a mini-console. Did anyone make something interesting/useful for the Pi yet, or is it purely a toy? I’m imagining it’d be a nice way to keep a server running in a low cost from-home fashion.

Lots of fun things to do with it, but until it gets that speedy JVM from Oracle and LWJGL it’s just a toy for me

Cas

I was trying to use it as a media server, but the software just isn’t there yet. Linux versions of Spotify are flakey and don’t play all tracks back properly[1], and although there’s a build of XBMC for it, I couldn’t actually persuade it to play any media.

I’m toying with the idea of hooking a few together for a render farm, as soon as I figure out what to render. ;D

[1] Insert usual rant about linux sound here

Will the Oracle ARM JVM be free? Last time checked it wasn’t. I just searched but couldn’t find anything.

Yes, at least as in beer. Think these are them - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/embedded/downloads/javase/index.html. It’s not the page I looked at two weeks ago which I can’t seem to find now - in fact the link from http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads is now a 404. ???

softfp - won’t work on latest recommended Pi OS. Annoying.

Cas

I had no idea this existed! :o

I just read this, looks like java se embedded is not free to distribute which makes it a bit useless:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/embedded/resources/se-embeddocs/index.html#faq10

There has been a recent change about that but only for the Raspberry Pi. Rather use OpenJDK ;D

I use Mageia Linux 2 daily, it works like a charm, I can read any video without any trouble. VLC is cool

Can you give a source? As far as I can tell that article is up to date. It says that you can develop on java se embedded, but you can’t distribute without licensing fees.

I know Oracle relaxed a bit this aspect only about the fees, I will try to find the source as soon as possible.
