Project Natal

The project it self is very promising. But I think this promotional video overestimate for sure the current state of the project. This is like what happened 2 or 3 weeks ago on the company I work. The television guys came and made some reportage about the new technology which is being worked in the company, but as I was core tester of the project and I have seen the video they made and shown on television I said like: “WTF?”. 40-50% of what they said was lies… And overestimation of what was currently done… I think the video is kinda proof of concept and not what they actually have. At least this is my opinion(I might be very wrong).

That video is 1 year old

It now has the new odd name Kinect.

Funny how the E3 demonstration this year was so fake http://kotaku.com/5562639/get-a-look-at-kinects-star-wars-game (well alot of the 2009 E3 demonstration was fake too)

It was originally claimed it could detect indevidual fingers, but the smallest objects it can pick up have to be at least something like 2cm wide. My fingers aren’t that wide. There have been leaks over the last year from various development teams using it that it’s not actually that great. It’s meant to be very unreliable, at least compared to the perfect usage you see in the promo videos.

Without a doubt I think this is a step in the right direction (more and better ways to interact with technology), I’m just very skeptical that this particular step is that great or will be that ground breaking. In many ways it’s just an EyeToy++. I personally think the lack of tactile response is a major issue which I think makes this and similar pieces of technology flawed. Microsoft are also talking about Kinect as though it will become the mainstream, as though this is how gamers will be interacting in the future. Much of that is marketing, but I also find this idea flawed. Although the Wiimote requires physical interaction like Kinect, you can easily play the vast majority of games using it sitting down with the Wiimote in your lap (WiiSports is one of the few titles that really requires you to stand up). This requirement for physical interaction, even if it’s only waving your arms whilst sitting, is far more then the equivalent required from most games using the WiiMote. I suspect this is too much effort for most users (not because I’m saying gamers are lazy, but simply because people want to have to put in as little effort as needed for each time they play a game).

Kinect and Sony’s motion controller thing are both mainly developed in response to the Wiimote, as a challenger to Nintendo’s implementation of a natural interaction device. Neither will topple the Wiimote simply because the Wiimote is standard for the Wii where as this is just an XBox accesory. That automatically means that it’s not standard for the XBox 360, and this will hit development for the device.

But again, definitely a step in the right direction. That’s my two cents.

The Kinect is just over hyped and over promised even though technically its not fully there yet. I guess MS are betting that they’ll be able to improve it over time and get it where it should be. Since it is mostly software based its easy to update.

The Sony Move on the other hand looks pretty solid and should work much better and more precisely then the Wiimote.

A big meh from me for both (Kinetic and Move). But we’ll have to see, won’t we?

Personally I really dont like excessive motion game systems. Im more of a chess man.

Hehe ;D
