Pool Comet Aquarium

This lively 3D fish was developed on Java3D and the WorldShiow3D framework. It can run on a regular web browser or in a standalone form. The standalone application can be integrated with Java speech engines, so the fish can talk to you when you play with it.

Play with the fish:

  1. Use your mouse to touch different parts of the fish (body, head, fins, eyes, and tail), you will get different messages. If you touch the fish too frequently in a short time, it will get very agitated.

  2. Click the food can to feed the fish. When you grab a food and move around, the fish will come to catch the food.

  3. The fish can give you a presentation about itself.

If your computers have Java3D installed, just use the following link to start the application.

Hope you enjoy it. Thanks.

If you were using a Java-capable browser, you would see “Fish Web3D- Pool Comet Aquarium” instead of this paragraph.

I get the above message on both FireFox and IE6… I have no problems running other Java applets in either. Is there a webstart version?

Sorry, we don’t have a web-start version yet. Will consider in the future.

After you install Java 3D, you should run this application on your browser. Please see this site for Java 3D installation.

How does this site help me install java 3D? It’s purpose is to help you make your application webstartable with Java 3D. Wich is a good idee, as I will never install Java 3D. I refuse to put files in the jre folder, where it might conflict with other applications.

I’ve got java + java3d installed and other applets work for me, but firefox is telling me that I’m missing a plugin when trying to load yours. I don’t think I’ve ever seen java3d working in my browser… you’d probably have better luck with webstart.

The application was tested on Windows XP and 2000, IE, and Netscape. It was working fine. The Java 3D version is 1.3.1. Here is the link for download:

gah, too lazy to install java3d, i guess web start has spoilt me!

This is a regular applet. Could someone try to see it’s working for FireFox or not? Thanks,

http://www.ws3dsoft.com/examples/fish_applet.html

It runs in Fire Fox, but the fish model was broken (big triangle on the side of him), there were only three colors (black, white and blue) in the applet, the ground was a mess of a few triangles, and I was getting about 4 FPS on a AMD2600 512MB RAM, Geforce 5500FX 256MB RAM. Java3D 1.3.1

Sorry to hear that. Must be something not compatible. It’s working fine on IE and Netscape.

Adam’s top tips for j3d:

  1. Don’t use it
  2. Don’t use it
  3. If you’re already using it, it won’t work for most people unless you use webstart or there’s an “i” in the day of the week and they have fewer than 6 letters in their first name
  4. Use webstart
  5. Most people won’t install j3d
  6. Unless you use webstart, which does it for them
  7. Most people can’t install j3d (would damage their JVM)
  8. Unless you use webstart, which keeps them separate
  9. Every few months, yor game will stop working, because a new release of j3d came out that broke everything.
  10. Unless you use webstart.

…which can neatly be summarised as: Use Webstart.

Someone successfully ran the plugin on FireFox. They said you have to first register the plugin.

By the way, thanks for the tips on WebStart.
