It seems that we were right about the significant barrier to entry that the registered version of QuakeWorldTM caused for our playable demo. In order to lower the barrier, we have made our Java QuakeWorld server available at:
http://www.realityinteractive.com/software/alpha/index.html
Aside from being only a prototype, the server code has not been touched in months; there is severely limited functionality and, of course, bugs. This server has the same requirements as the original Technology Preview – a shareware version of QuakeTM (which is easily obtained).
It is our hope, as always, that by making this software available that we encourage others to begin new Java games or finish the ones that they are working on in order to add to the growing inertia of Java games.
I am always available via email at rgrzywinski@realityinteractive.com if you have questions, concerns or just want to chat.
Enjoy!
BTW: I created another top level topic to separate any server posts from the client posts. Sorry if this is not in keeping with the tone of the forum.
