Pirate Party

A small game where you are trying to keep the ship together as nature and other ships try to blow it apart. Built in my own custom engine using LWJGL as well as Android. I am a long-time lurker but this is my first game so I am curious how it works and what people think of it.

The game is OK imho, everything works

A minimalistic tutorial-screen might be a good idea once you have it more polished, the gameplay is not difficult to grasp, but the lack of visual feedback hinders the user from instantly “getting it”, for example the selection could use some graphical feedback, like a red outline around the part when dragging it, etc.

The ship parts are hard to see, not only because of the water being not very translucent, but also because the ship parts do not have a contour that’s really standing out, sure they have sharp borders, but their texture/tone/color does not change towards the border, which decreases the visibility of the parts, plus they get stuck into each other.

It’s a pity the parts don’t collide with each other, would be a nice effect when they’re floating on top of each other.

The screen getting dark triggers a bit eagerly sometimes.

Otherwise thumbs up from me, the little ai-guy moving around to stay on the boat is pretty nice.

Oh and holy shit, 228MB??? are you microsoft by any chance? Releasing a desktop version for this game with an embedded JVM and all that jazz is not necessary, nobody will play this mobile-game on a desktop, you might as well upload a *.jar with only the code and assets since the people here all have a JVM installed.

I completely agree with VaTTeRGeR about previous points!

Yes, here, but many many times I’ve found that people doesn’t simply have a Jre installed, so provide it is the only way. For example in my games ( small prototype, small game, btw!) this is not a big deal, but if you want to share to all people around is the only way I’ve found!

You’re right, but only IF he would want to pump out desktop releases for this game regularly.

It wouldn’t make sense to do that though, this is not a game that would realistically get played somewhere else than on a phone/tablet (mayyyybe in the browser) so why bother uploading that huge file everytime?

Thanks! a lot for the advice, I updated it and hopefully the tiles are a little more clear.

And about the windows build; I don’t like how big it is, but I have a lot of friends who are useless technologically, so I wanted to make it easy for them

Hi

Where is the version for Linux? I only see Android, OS X and Windows.

Took some time over Christmas to play with TeaVM, and got a HTML5 version of the game working. So if you are afraid of the download, it works in the browser.

I get JRE load error on my Mac.
