Pick me up

Well it’s one of those times where one’s creativity sinks way too low and he ends up doing nothing but tweaking old demos, games he once wrote and forgot…
I need to take part in any project, be it 2D, 3D (java3D, JoGL), I’m sick of making ports and idling >:(
I took Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calculus 1, and 3, Discrete Math 1 & 2 and Statistics…
I’m a college student, will be Junior next in the fall. I major Computer Science in Umass Lowell.
:-/

FlyingGuns? JPilot?

well the Xith3D scenegraph project always has room for more people with in-depth Java3D & OpenGL knowledge. Drop a line in those forums if you have any questions about the project  There is also talk of creating an example game which can help show newbies how to use Xith3D in a game setting…

Cheers,

Will.

FlyingGuns? JPilot? <-- What is that dude?
@William:
Yes Sir, I would like to take part in any challenging project

well I am guessing you would be the right person for adding some cool new features to the JOGL based renderer based on what I have seen from your demos. Also polishing it up a bit. Xith3D has shadows although when used with complex geometry they don’t appear perfect to me. Some of the other effects I saw in your demos would be great to have as well like the embossing.

Best thing to do would be do download the code, have a look see if you like it - decide if you wish to contribute - add some new impressive featre, post it in the forum and you’ll have developer status in not time

Just a warning when you download from CVS - the xith_utilities.jar library is a bit broken, you will need to also download an old version of it from here: https://xith3d.dev.java.net/source/browse/xith3d/third-party/xith/xith_utilities.jar (the com.xith.* package) and add that as well in your class path (this will hopefully be fixed very soon).

More information about installing etc at http://xith.org/

Cheers,

Will.

Does Xith3D support MD3/MD2, 3DSMax loaders/animator?
If not I’ll come up with those within few days

not yet it doesn’t - loaders for those would be totally awesome! make sure you use the loader interface  (the ASE model format loader would be a good reference for that).

I have fixed the xith_utilities.jar bug btw and am in the process of rolling out the patch

Will.

Hey William! I’ve seen him first!! :-*

JPilot: a simple gaming framework to checkout networking features and test design approaches.

E.g. could use an attractive 2D graphics engine.

When dealing with xith3d, why not doing that by porting FlyingGuns to xith3d thereby developing the necessary utilities (like the loaders you mention)?

FlyingGuns is a demo for the HeadQuarter networking engine, but could serve as a demo for xith3d as well.

If theres demand, I could turn FlyingGuns into an OpenSource project. But there NEEDS to be demand.

sounds like a fine compromise

seriously I think the Xith3D can go places, but the most important time is right now when the library is young. Having a working, playable, cool application which runs on Xith3D is just what it needs - publicity wise.

Will.

Same for FlyingGuns.

With FG, a set of technologies like HeadQuarter or JXInput could go OpenSource. Just, there needs to be public demand and I am not going to do it alone.

For FlyingGuns is a framework, other games could easily evolve from that.

How large is Flying Guns? It needs to be small and not require additional libraries to include it in the Xith3D tutorial. Is the sourcecode available?

Loaders are definitely a good enhancement for Xith3D. ;D It would be especially nice to have loaders for the formats which are supported by Java3D in Xith3D. Currently ASE is supported.

Oh no, for sure its not suitable as a tutorial, bc. 3D is only a small part of it.

Sorry I was overwhelmed by exams and homework last week and thus could only work on the loader for less than 2 hours.
I’m tweaking things a bit as I type these things and the code will be up either tonight or tomorrow.

If you’re still bored, I am looking for some more help on Galactic Village, especially in the Java3D space. We’re probably going to move the Java3D stuff to Xith3D once Xith3D becomes more mature, but right now there’s a bunch of more Java3D work still to do.

Plus, if you’re interested, we’re based in Westford, MA – just down the street from Lowell! And we are planning on going commercial, so “compenstation” is definitely in the cards as well…

Java Cool Dude - I have posted a link to this thread in the Xith3D forums - today alone there were about three requests for one loader or another. Please post your progress there, I am really impressed with what I can see already and I’m sure it will generate a lot of interest.

Cheers,

Will.

Sir I really really want to be a part of your team not because of the commercial aspects of the game( infact as long as I’m a student, I code just for fun) but because of your location which is very close to where I live.
I can’t do any serious coding this week though because of some exams and school projects which require all my time and attention. But as soon as I’m done with them I’m sure to get back to you
Anyways I would appreciate getting hold of your phone number via private message so we can work things out faster and better.
@William:
I hate when I promise something that later on I realize I can’t do.
I won’t be able to post any Xith3D code till wednesday night at the earliest. :’(
I’m very busy this week and I have tons to do.
The loader works fine so far except that the weapon is somehow misplaced, but I’ll fix that as soon as possible.
One other concern is, how do I submit a byte array to the texture class so that I can use my bitmap loader in conjunction with the mesh loader?

I am not sure myself, but I am sure someone would be able to answer that in the forum.

Fair anough about promicing things - it’s the main reason why I am keeping the lid on my current development, I don’t want to say “this is what it will be” and then not deliver.

Will.

nice one. more loader in Xith3D would rock. and do stuff when u can. no rush. we all cool on the Xith3D vibe.
