Oracle's Cloud Office!

Oracle just announced that they will have a web browser based office suit to go up against Google Docs and MS Office Web apps

at first I was thinking its gonna suck, especially since its suppose to be based on javafx but after seeing the video it actually looks really shock good.

Still finding it hard to believe that its JavaFX, looks just like an ajax app but can’t be sure could just be a mock up or something.

Now we can be sure Oracle will invest in client side technologies: it will rely on it for ‘enterprise solutions’ !

Yay!

Looks very cool. So its all done with applets?

I have a hard time believing that its running so smoothly with 4 full window applets on firefox, so it might not be applet (could be the new prism applets though) but for now i’d say its ajax (until proven otherwise).

Interesting, I’d reason the other way around: this is rather easy in Java, and horrible to get right in ‘ajax’ (if by ajax you mean: html, css, js and ajax).

Well obviously since it’s “running” on the iPad and iPhone it can’t be Java, it’s got to be webkit stuff. Not to mention he said “open-web standards” as the backbone for it, which typically means HTML etc.

I did also make that point on #lwjgl, however someone point out that it could just be a proof of concept as opposed to it actually running there, (the laptop is certainly a fake) and it could just be a pasted screenshot on top of the ipad and iphone. Do notice there is quiet a bit of video editing going on in that video (fade effects) and firefox being used without tool bars.

Also yesterday at Larry’s JavaOne keynote he did stress that Steve Jobs is his best friend, so you never know it might be a sign of things to come.

Quote from the article:
“Oracle has promised that Cloud Office uses web standards, but it will also use JavaFX”

So… a little bit of both.

Erm, it’s not just “webkit” stuff - the demo was running in Firefox!

At first I thought it was an HTML5 product, but certain things in the video kind of detract from that. For instance, when he changed a value in the spreadsheet, the graph above it had to make an ajax call to get the updated graph… indicating the server is rendering the image, rather than, say, a object.

This is true, but if it uses any Java/JavaFX at all it won’t work on iOS. And if they’re best friends, why would Jobs make an about-face now? He made his announcement about “Hell no Flash/Java” after Oracle bought Java (I think), certainly after his best friend would have said “we’re thinking of buying Java.”

The key point is that making Flash or Java support would reduce the strength of the app store and therefore revenue. The app store is already suffering due to the free-to-play cost model becoming more and more prevalent, where people are getting their cash through 3rd party ad providers and incentivized offers (download this to get this!). It is now official that your app will be rejected if you do any of those things… so clearly Apple is trying to buckle down in order to maximize revenue again… applets and Flash would be in completely the other direction.

lol.

brb gotta renew my $100 developer’s license. ::slight_smile:

the iphone also has t-mobile instead of at&t at the top

I should have said “doing worse than it was before” rather than “suffering.” Obviously it’s a massive cash cow for Apple. My point was more that they are doing everything they can to maximize revenue, and adding Java support would not be in that direction.
