OpenGL 3.0 is (Nearly) Here; Why Use DirectX?

Actually, a really nice post promoting Java for (3D) Graphics…

ETA anyone?

Yes ;D DirectX is less reliable, closed source and not cross-platform at all. I rather use JOGL. I agree with you.

Sadly, in gaming working on windows + xbox is more “cross-platform” than working on windows, mac and linux :frowning:

It is possible so use OpenGL and JOGL on many video games machines, I think it is possible to do it on XBox too but I’m not completely sure.

September 2007 :-\

“nearly here” is somewhat misleading. Only the spec is “nearly here”, which was initially promised to be ready for siggraph 2007. It’s been “nearly here” for a year, and now almost half a year late and not a peep out of the GL3 working group except a few poor excuses. Even the newletters have dried up.

Even if/when the spec is released, and assuming that they’ve not made a complete mess of it (which is entirely likely given how little they seem to have done), then it’ll be at least a few months before drivers are available. Likely 6 before we get some stable ones up to the quality of GL2.0 drivers. And even then it’ll be 6 months to a year before the install base gets widespread enough to make them a viable target.

In other words, don’t hold your breath.
