one switch shooter

I’ve been working on a game for the One Switch competition at retroremakes.com for most of this month now. Today was the deadline and I actually missed it :frowning: :frowning: I knew I shouldn’t have waited to submit 3 minutes before the deadline… The game isn’t exactly complete but its certainly playable and I just figured I’d post it as it was at the time of the deadline.

I may do a little more work on it and make into a more-than-one-switch game (I don’t plan on spending more than a couple extra days on it though…). As it is there are a couple of different enemies that either just move around randomly or sit there and blink at you (literally), you shoot them by tapping spacebar and you avoid getting killed by activating your shields, which is done by deactivating your weapon  I just got to the point where everything worked, the next part would have been to make it fun… so if you try the game you will probably want to make it brief

My guess is that the game is windows only at the moment, although it has not actually been tested on a mac (it was tested on one linux machine, didn’t work).

heres an early screen: http://www.cyntaks.com/projects/oneswitch/screen.jpg
and heres what it looks like at the time of posting:

Screenshots looks good, but didn’t start on my iMac (java1.4.2).

If you could add a windowed mode I could send you the webstart console stacktrace.

Nice looking game with some T4XI style background. Interesting idea, but I would preffer to be able to move the ship myself. Would then be a standard shoot-em-up, but that’s OK with me.

Good GFX and ran smooth on WinXP & Java 1.5

The sounds and graphics are very nice…

Not being able to control movement of your ship is frustrating.

Run on W2K3 server with Java 1.5…

It went full screen for about a second, then exited without a message. Windows XP, Geforc 5500

Works fine and looks good on an P4HT@3.2Ghz/ATI X800XT-PE/XP/Java1.5 system at home and on an P4HT@2,8Ghz/Intel915G/XP/Java1.4.2 system at work.
I saw that competition on retroremakes too, but i still don’t get why i should limit myself to one switch when i could do so much better with “normal” controls.
Anyway…given that artificial limit, i think you did quite a good job with that game.

For people with severe mobility limitations, it’s not so artificial…
(as I can’t see any smiley, I’m not sure you were serious or kidding)

Thanks for the comments, I agree that the controls are a bit frustrating I think the first thing I’ll change is handing over ship movement to the player  I’ll get a windowed version up so that you could give me a stack trace c_lilan, that would be great  As for it not working on linux… not sure what to say I really just need to install linux and figure it out.

edit: here is the windowed version: http://www.cyntaks.com/projects/oneswitch/webstart/oneswitch-windowed.jnlp

If letting go of “fire” to raise your shields before colliding with something was actually more beneficial, that’d be great, but right now having your shield up doesn’t seem to help that much against collisions. If it did, it would be an interesting challenge to balance when to fire and when to let your shield up. Right now it’s just, “I have to hold down space indefinitely or I’ll miss a bad guy and he’ll run into me” because your shield doesn’t help. Make shields more powerful and I think the game will be more fun. On top of that, how about instead of the random flying you work on a bit of AI that moves in a non-stupid manner?

don’t know what you mean about the shields not being powerful enough, if the shield is up then enemies run into it and you are not damaged, if it is down they run into you and you lose health. If you are talking about random flying for the ship, that is how it is supposed to be… it is supposed to run into enemies and you are supposed to either shoot them or block if you have to. If you are talking about the random moving enemies, thats just because I ran out of time and added something quickly

Sorry the games stops and exits before i have time to read the console (event outputting to a file doesn’t work).

I think i have read smthing about a Devil lib not found (but i’m not sure)

:frowning:

Lilian

ok, thanks for trying

Great stuff, I’m impressed with the playability desipite the limits… Now show us the manually controlled version!
