Oblivious

I’m really excited- my copy of Oblivion just arrived. Zingbat will doubtless think me an evil reprobate but I’m really looking forward to playing it…

i envy you >:(

Screenshots!!!

Not allowed to install it yet cos I’m still at work… even though I work at home… on my home computer … and it’s just sitting there downstairs… makes sound like Homer thinking about donuts

I can be self disciplined. I can be…

So whats are yours system specifications, and how much it crawls?

I don’t know yet, it’s only installing now.

If I have to upgrade my computer to play it I shall weep…

I listened that 1GB of memory, and 6600 series of the video cards are bare minimum. They botched it again.

A pretty modest system requirement for a high-end title tbh.

The Doom3 engine needs no-less, yet does significantly less with it IMO.

I don’t quite know what you mean by “botched” there, Raghar- I need more memory to get a decent framerate and good resolution in the outdoor areas ( currently running an AMD 3000 processor, 512 mb ram, GeForce 6600 ) - but they are throwing around a huge amount of detail and aside from some miracle-grow vegetation popups and some extensive load times when moving between different types of region - dungeon to outdoors, outdoors to city and so on - it is looking nothing short of amazing.

Morrowind needed a high end machine when it came out, but it had a depth and scale to it that mean’t it was still worth buying years later when it was within the reach of everyone’s PC- I think this will be much the same. So far I am impressed. But I’m going to have to raid Dabs for some more memory…

I’ve bought my copy on Wednesday and have played it for around 10 hours now. It’s a great game but it requires really high end hardware. I’m playing it on a P4HT @ 3.2Ghz / 1,5GB RAM / 7800gs (30% overclocked) @ 1280*1024 with no AA but a bit of AF. Settings are more or less at 75-100% (viewing distance for example is at 100% and so are the tree details). I’m getting 12-20fps in outdoor areas (which are looking fantastic btw) and up 70 in dungeons. The low outdoor performance is not that bad, because it’s not an fps. And it’s looking soooo good… ;D

Only thing I have found irritating so far, is the frequency of crashes - made worse by the far too infrequent auto-saving.

If they were going to release a buggy game, they should have atleast put in a protection system for the crashes.
Currently, it is very easy to play for literally hours without remembering to save. (perhaps this is the sign of an immersive game :D)
but oh how you cry when it crashes, and you realize magnitude of your error :frowning:

I had not a single crash in around 20 hours of playing now… ???

aye, shite performance on a 6600GT, P4 @ 2.7, no ingame crashes but did have one when exiting game.

Runs smooth(ish… say 20 fps) for me with all settings maxed.
And the game is so fun I’m about to snap in half.

Anyone played this on a 360 yet? I doubt my pc is up to running it smoothly, but I don’t know how good the version on the XBox is…

6600GT, 1gb ram, 2.4 ghz P4. Settings on ‘medium’ and it runs as smooth as silk. It does crash sometimes… (every 5 hours ofzo). I love this game

Yeah, the crashes seem to be time related - though usually take a particular event to trigger them.

I’ve had it crash 4 times now, 3 in combat, 1 during a quick-travel.
This is in the space of around 16 hours of play.

It seems to occur when a character performs an action that involves an animation that hasn’t been loaded yet;
something that would typically cause a small stutter, but instead crashes the game.

No doubt its a memory leak of some sort - that’ll teach them to not use a GC’ed language ;D

I’m playing the 360 version.

Performance is about what EgonOlson stated. Framerate in dungeons is about perfect, while outdoors it hits the 12-18 fps range if you’re fighting some guy.

I think they turn up the effects all the way, and it looks awesome. More than makes up for any slow performance. Also, I get both HDR and AA on mine
What I really love is the shimmery effect you see on all the cave/dungeon walls, and how it responds to the spells you cast. I remember one particular dungeon (near the beginning, under that ruined tower with the couple of skeletons in it) where you can fire spells down a misty hallway and it just looks incredible. Also I remember a zombie or two coming out of the mist and seeing nothing but a silhouette of the creature in the distance, which I thought looked really cool. Really there’s just so much amazing stuff in the game it’s hard to describe it with words. I also love the color ramp effect when I frost-touch someone and they turn all blueish.

Oh, and besides the graphics, the gameplay is sooo addicting and fun and varied (combat feels very solid, and you’re appropriately dazed for a second when you get whacked really hard in the head), and the physics engine is completely amazing. Honestly, I could have fun for hours just summoning things in the mages guild and throwing various stuff around.

And, looking back at your posts, Xbox 360 version hasn’t crashed as far as I’ve seen (but now that I’ve said it… probably will).

Ahh, I need to go play it again. Gotta get some work finished first though. :\
