No progress bar showing when using JAVA web start (JNLP)

Hi all,

I have the problem that when I execute my JNLP file, there is no progress bar showing. The only thing I see is an indication of the amount of time remaining, and that thing doesn’t know what it’s saying. The game itself runs fine BTW.

I have about 15 JAR files that are loaded before the game is run, and have a total size of 20MB. The main JAR file is 0.2MB in size. This is annoying because users might think the application has locked up, and stop to bother.

For instance when running “http://www.cokeandcode.com/spaceinvaders104/si104.jnlp” from Kevin Glass, there is a progress bar, where also more than 1 JAR is used. My JNLP is very basic and does contain exotic stuff.

On another forum someone has said that this has been happening since JAVA 1.6, and the progress bar now only shows for the main JAR file. I don’t like to put all libraries and other music/sfx files in to one JAR, are there any other solutions? Can this be related to the server on which the files are located?

Many thanks,
Regards Chris

Have you actually made a very big JAR (even if it’s filly with random stuff) and see whether a progressbar is visible?

Maybe there is something wrong with the HTTP server (maybe you wrote it yourself?) and the HTTP header ‘Content-Length’ is not set.

If this is truely a regression in Java 1.6… well, just as you thought things couldn’t get much worse, they proved us wrong!

I’ve had similar issues in the past, its mostly been due to the server where the files are stored.

Thanks for the quick feedback!

What I will first try to do, is to put the stuff on another server.

I am just using a server from a company, so there is not much I can change on that side. But I have another location where I could place the files, but that one doesn’t support setting MIME types. But it might work better with the progress bar. I will let you know if that works!

Chris

It works! Thanks a lot!

So now I am loading the JNLP from the server that supports MIME types and loading all JAR files from the other server (which suddenly makes the progress bar work perfectly).

Chris
