New Year Resolutions -- 2017

A place to put programming-related goals for year 2017.

Mine:

This is the year I will get an actual program out for sale. I have allowed cold feet and self-doubts to block finishing anything for far too long. Will probably just go for itch.io instead of Steam, initially.

Also: strengthen knowledge about functional programming and Java 8. Started reading “Java 8 In Action” and it seems to be a very good book for this.

I want to finish Dodger Dog, then maybe put it up on steam for free. Then make another game with better programming practices that is not all spaghetti code and actually thought out before I start.

Actually make a game that isn’t total shit

Release Battledroid to alpha to Patreons (by Easter), and to “Minimum Viable Product” (feature complete but with no content) by midsummer.

Cas :slight_smile:

Not really limited to 2017, but three things I want to accomplish in my life:

Release a game on Steam,
Publish a fantasy novel,
Join a band as the vocalist.

I think that’s doable.

Well first off I need to post here more…
I’ve been running for 4 months, I wanna see if I can go 10km without breaking by the end of 2017
I also want to peruse some kind of business, maybe start a service of some kind …

As for games, I want to do more Ludum dares! The last one we ordered vegetarian pizza and sushi, I slept on the floor… Best game dev experience ever. Maybe Ill do compos and make more original games

Hope everything goes fine this new year. Year 2016 was pretty bad, most of prominent people here passed away, I got sinus, etc.,

[]I started exercising this year, and wanted to continue it the next year too without breaks.
[
]Learn a new language. I’m focusing on Malayalam (since I’ve got friends who speak it natively).
[]Participate in many hackathons. I’ve been part of two hackathons till now (one state wide and one national wide) and that is awesome.
[
]Plan out sleep, I spent last four months with barely 4 hours of sleep every day, and it broke me down after the last hackathon where I spent 3 days with absolutely no sleep.
[*]Try not to keep this same list for the next year.

as usual, my new years resolutions are no new year resolutions.

2016 was a decent year for me, not as insane as 2015 (thank god), but I feel like I got a lot done. In 2017 I want to;

  • Get a raise at work. I found out I’m being significantly underpaid (even for someone in my situation), which sucks because I love my work and the people. I just want to be paid how much I’m worth.

  • Go on (a small) tour with my band and release our first EP

  • Finish a couple of personal projects that I’m interested in. This will be good for my resume and for sharpening my skills

  • Post a new picture to my Instagram account at least every week. This means going out and exploring new places! I’ve thoroughly explored the closest towns near me, now I want to start branching out and finding new areas

  • Actually commit to working out. I move around far less now that I’m a full time software developer and I don’t want to pack on fat!

  • Continue to teach new developers at work and hopefully hone that skill. I love teaching, but I need to figure out what works and what doesn’t

  • Limit the amount of time I spend zoning out on Reddit, be more productive in general

I hope everyone had a good 2016 and here’s to an even better 2017!

You can do it! Well, unless you have some heart problems or something…

In high school they made us run 10km once a year, the first time it was scary, it’s a long distance, but after a while you settle into it. I’m definitely not a runner but I got through them (didn’t break), you should be able to as well, considering you’ve ran 4 months already, which is great!

Haha, good one!

I really want to finish studying this year and then get time to tie up all the loose ends I’ve been ignoring like fixing stuff around the house, exercising and hanging out with friends more.

Like you guys, I also want to participate in some game jams to test some concepts. Ludlum dare or a physical all weekend one. I’m not sure if I’d do it with another person unless they were also willing to work in java. Few game devs use java where I am.

Learning more about AI, electronics and the C programming language would also be cool.

I just want to finish my Master of Science and get a decent job as a software developer.

                  eatCroissant();
             }
         }
    }
}

hahaha same here!!
I want to live alone, eliminate many fears and be more social and finally be able to live economically from my projects while I travel the world in a caravan… 8) 8)

It’s not easy ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile:

(I know this is an old joke but…) my new year resolution is 2560x1440 if my new monitor arrives tomorrow or Thursday! :slight_smile:

For the real topic: I usually don’t make new years resolution as I don’t have that much bad habits (non-smoker, non-drinker) but I have at least certain goals for my project:
New render engine (this was postponed way to long now, actually started some days ago)
Fiddle around with JS, as my shared code should be able to be transpilled to JS (e.g. through jsweet if I can figure it out) I might make a HTML5 port soon(-ish)

I don’t have too many resolutions…

First, my big resolution is that I want everyone else to get their s*** together.

Second, I want to get what I’m working on to a state where I’d be willing to risk the embarrassment to post it in the WIP section… although, I had expected to be at that point around 6 months ago, so who knows.
