New to Java

Newbie & Debugging Questions

Hello everyone. New to the boards and Java, though I’ve been programming games in C++ for the better part of the last decade. I have heard good things about Java and found that my curiosity has gotten the best of me. So…

I just picked up, http://www.amazon.com/Sams-Teach-Yourself-Java-Days/dp/0672329433/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1288296356&sr=1-1 to learn the basics of the language and the NetBeans IDE. What other references would you all suggest I look into? I am interested in making both stand alone and web based applications at the moment. Thanks for any help.

The following libraries are probably some of the libraries you’ll want to look into :

LWJGL, Slick2D, JOGL, JMonkeyEngine, Ardor3d, PulpCore

FYI don’t ever say “thanks for the info” or anything like that or someone might accidentally ban you thinking you’re a spammer (that’s a common phrase spammers use). I almost did myself.

Wow, first time I have heard that one… but I will take your advice and remove that offending language from my vocabulary. How about I not say thanks and you can just take it on good faith that I mean every bit of what I won’t say?

Let me grab my crystal ball to see how that’ll work out. The problem is that a near-zero post count combined with a very general remark somehow triggers us mods to almost ban on sight. Naturally, we have developed awesome powers that gives us the ability to look at your other posts too. Among other things, it has made us decide to appreciate your contribution.

Yeah. We’ll often see someone with 1 or 2 posts say “thanks for the info” or something totally general like that that is totally vague and typically doesn’t fit a topic.

ex.
Topic: “Check Out My Game!”
Post: “here is my game”
Post: “I think the gameplay could be improved here”
Post: “really cool, great graphics”
Post: “do you guys think I should make it harder?”
Post: “thanks for the info, my friend!” <---------- spammer

I understand what you are saying. However, there is a difference between what you are describing, and me asking a question, receiving and answer, and thanking the person that took their time to give some insight. Anyway, I won’t make that mistake again…
