New to Java game development

Hi my name is Matt. I am 19 years old and just recently joined this website. I am a complete beginner regarding the java-gaming and I would like to learn as I make my own game. I am not new to java thought, just java-gaming. My idea of a game is a simple 2d action adventure game (imagine mario) but my character will be able to use a ranged weapon and a melee weapon killing mobs along the way and collecting money and at the end of the stage killing a boss. This is my idea of a game that I would really like to make, however being so new to this am I getting ahead of myself or am I on the right track? Regardless of this, I would like to be guided for a start.

Thank You

Welcome to JGO!

Good that you have a not-too-complex first game project idea.
Good resources

Welcome to JGO.

Good luck with your project.
Remember to go to Google first for help, but if that doesn’t work, there are plenty of people on this forum who can help too.

Welcome to JGO.

3rd time that has been said ;D

I would take a look at bucky robert’s tutorials. That is how I came into JGO.

Have fun!

Welcome! You are not getting yourself ahead of yourself, but I highly recommend only using Java2D for learning new techniques, and using Libraries such as LWJGL.

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxiBXBY1a-axNVGIvQKGcNA <—coding universe, I suggest for learning LWGJL, he already did 2D, sound, input, and then moved on to 3D

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnlpv-hhcsAtEHKR2y2fW4Q <— General java programmer, did an RPG, excellent for learning things like Enums and other good techniques,

Hope you enjoy!

Ooh I have a perfect person for you! Look up TheChernoProject on YouTube, he has a Java2D series that is amazing! He goes into detail about everything and you make a cool game. Probably my favorite youtuber.

I thank all of you for showing me the direction I need to take. I will keep posting the progress of my project when I start. ;D

I must say welcome to you fine sir ;D. This website has many esteemed and published programmers (including Notch who may pop by every blue moon) who can certainly answer any question you may have.

I recommend learning the Java2D syntax to begin with and move to libGDX

And through all of your programming remember to have fun

Off topic but Notch unfortunately hasn’t been on the forums for a few years now(I think), so thats rather sad :frowning: Reading through his posts though makes him seem even more awesome. He’s my programming idol! I know its silly, but I hope one day I could be as good of a programmer as him, and maybe make a game that attracts even a little attention!

Thats why i said on the BLUE MOON :point:

Was looking for the one time Markus posted on a thread of mine, and stumbled on this gem! Definitely worth revisiting, some good jokes:
