New post erasure abilities?

I was thinking that since Chris and Markus are pretty much AWOL these days and I have to sleep (and a spam bot recently managed to post 77 spam posts before I woke up to ban him) that it might be helpful to at least give a few people the capability of deleting posts? I’m mainly thinking of the users who are often reporting the spam to me in the first place.

I’m talking Riven, teletubo, kapta, and bleb. How do you guys feel about having post deletion powers? And how does everyone else feel? I’d be giving these permissions with the understanding that they’d only be used for spam (i.e. don’t delete a post because Julien gets particularly heated about JOGL ;)). Anyway seems like it’ll help out quite a bit.

If anyone else thinks they’ve active members of JGO that are trustworthy, PM me.

Sure. It only makes sense to delegate this mundane yet crucial stuff. (Reporting spam is even more mundane)

Can count on me .
(and I promise not to use the power for evil )

+1 for delegates

By your command!

YES, NEED MORE POWER! ;D

but yeh would help kill the spam much quicker.

By the power of Greyskull!

+1

Can you also give them the power to ban the spammer?

clearing out some of the unused/inactive members would be cool too, cos in my estimate of the current 18,000 members about 16,000 of them are fake spam accounts.

I can’t give out anything aside from general mod abilities, unfortunately. But I’ll give those out now.

Okay, it’s done. You’re all “Banhammer” people, but the only way to give control was to make you moderators of every forum, so you’ll just see “Moderator” all the time. Too bad. Oh yeah, and TheAnalogKid is included in this as well.

Once again, please don’t delete or modify any posts etc. unless they’re spam. Go ahead and move stuff or whatever if people request for it, or if something is obviously in the wrong forum. I suppose you can all be considered Showcase judges now as well, given that you have control there, so go ahead and rate any games you feel are worth it and then move them to the Featured Games section.

Please still report the spam posts to me so I can still ban the user. Happy hunting.

Thanks, it seems to work. I just deleted some random topic the spam topic that got quite derailed, and it got wiped nicely. I gotta pay attention not to ‘modify’ other peoples posts though, now that is it where the ‘quote’ link was.

That makes perfect sense and I don’t see anyone having any real problem with it… Whoops looks like I am late, I guess the new moderators have been crowned. Feel free to test your powers and delete this post because the party seems to be over :stuck_out_tongue:

Yay great , thanks .

I will make use of my powers when the right time comes . ™

Yeah, I’ve done that before, actually. I think I’ve realized every time before I actually saved the modification, though.

Hi

I’ve been trying to delete them as fast as I can too, but sometimes I have to sleep too. Any chance of some ban powers?, I’ve had it before where I’ve been deleting a spammers posts throughout the day, waiting for an admin to arrive with a ban hammer. It’s irritating deleting the same spammers posts dozens of times, only to see them appear again as the user account is still active.

I don’t recall an encounter with a radioactive spider or the like, but it seems that I’ve woken up with superpowers.

I’d be intrigued to see this school of design philosophy:

applied to other products. Cars would have an extra pedal that causes the fuel tank to ignite, airline seats would have an “Eject pilots” button right next to “Recline”. Radiotherapy machines would have insufficient hardware safety features, allowing proficient operators to administer massive overdoses… oh, wait.

So, I’m off to try and maintain the rigid mental discipline required not to abuse these powers. A strict regime of self-flagellation and meditation while immersed in icy mountain streams should do the trick…

I don’t ever sleep, and I get hassled with reported posts all the time by email too. Perhaps you could gift me your bandeletehammer as well.

I’m sure there are simpler ways to solve this spambot issues than to add more humanbots. Spambots never get tired, humanbots do :frowning:

Ideas for filtering out unwanted spambots?

  1. Better captcha filter? I always wanted to make an Applet based captcha filter, something that bots cannot read because it’s not an image.
  2. Accounts need to be activated by a human, preferably after making an “Hello” post in some “Introduction” forum to make sure it’s a human.
  3. Ban all Russian and Chinese IP’s  That should get rid of 60% of the crap.

I am just astonished that forum systems don’t seem to have any capabilities to filter out spambots. Most forums are plagued with these spambots, no matter what system they use to filter them out.

Oh well, it’s not like we’re swamped (daily).

Regarding your options:

  1. doable, but nobody except ChrisM has access to anything…
  2. raising the bar only a tiny bit will confuse most… humans
  3. unfair

Human spam killers are the best solution at this moment.
