New Phone - maybe try some J2ME again

I wrote a MIDP1.0 CLDC 1.0 programme a couple of years ago for my Siemens S55. It was so slow :frowning: However I’ve just slashed out on a shiny sony ericsson k750i. My old program loads at least 5 times faster, maybe even 10 times. Maybe it’s time for a return to J2ME.

However things have moved on. The new phone has MIDP2.0, CLDC 1.1 & also Java3D (JSR184), as well as something called Mascot Capsule v3 (whatever that is). Also does JSR-82 (Bluetooth) & JSR-75 (Something to do with the phone capabilities I think)

I assume I need a new J2ME download & a set of add-ons from sony-ericsson (hopefully includes emulator). Can I use Netbeans for development? Can I use Netbeans for both J2ME & J2SE development on the same computer?

Any suggestions for good reads/websites for the MIDP2.0 platform. I assume the Java3D is a subset of the desktop Java3D (guessing again).

I feel this phone is fast enough to host some decent java (shame I dont write any  ). Any tips gratefully received.

NB. It takes great pics too.

Hey Alan! There’s a J2ME forum on this site too!!! ;D

All you need to do is download the ‘wtk 2.2’ and it has an emulator and all the jars you need. It doesn’t have the jsr 184 docs however. I haven’t taken the time to track them down yet.

I’d recommend getting the Sony Ericsson version of the Wireless Toolkit for that phone. It’s almost the same as the regular Wireless Toolkit, except with skins for the SE phones, and on-device debugging!

Netbeans along with it’s mobility pack integrates fine with the Sony Toolkit.

Thanks chaps.

The Content thread in J2ME has got some good stuff.

Will look for the SE version of the wtk

/Edit All installed & working. ;D
That was much easier than installing the MIDP1.0 stuff two years ago.

Btw there is soem confusio nwith regard to JSR184.

JSR184 is NOT Java3D, though I think some marketing foks at soem of the phone companies have muddied that in their addvertising. JSR184 is a scene graph API for J2ME but it is not the Java3D scenegraph API, which predates JSR184 by many years.

It’s a 3D rendering engine

You can find more information on it (and download the toolkit), here http://hicorp.co.jp/english/products/mc_top.html

Thanks for the additional info guys.
