New MMORPG project: looking for free md2 animations and volunteers 3D designers.

Hi all.
We’ve started a Jogl MMORPG school projet, we’ll have to present it at the end of March.
This game called Errare isn’t basically turned to the quality of its animations, its main goal is to probe our teachers that Java is getting better and better.
Our problem is that noone in the team is good at drawing or making 3D animations, that’s why we’re looking for free animations (md2) or volunteers to create a few 3D characters…

If you guys are interested, don’t be shy, we need your help! ;D
Thanks.
See ya

For the start, you can google on free md2 models. I am shure that you will find a ton of material. Later, you can make your own models (or someone for you) of you have some special requirements. Just start with some free models and see how its going.

Ok, thanks a lot for your advice!

Can you tell me why you constrained yourself in md2 models? Is it because you have a loader already or you will write it from scratch? If it isn’t true, I can reccomend you a milkshape modeler and their ascii milkshape format - easy to understand and parse. And there are some good tutorials around here on how to load them and do skeletal animation…

We wrote our own loader from scratch.
Md2 is an open source format, moreover, it has been wildly used by quake 2, wich would let us use its characters for testing.

Does this answer to your question?

Yes
You have good reasons to use md2.

Good luck writing an mmorpg in 2-3 months ;D

I disagree - 2-3 months is plenty of time… for a MMORPG of pong :-\

Seriously though, you would be pushing it to write a text morgp in 2-3 months, little lone something with graphics. Even with a team of artists, you would just scratch the surface of what a MMORPG requires for art assets alone.

If you have to present this to your teachers with hopes of impressing them you really should think about something a little smaller scale.

Don’t worry, the truth is we started it a few months ago, we’re actually finishing the main engines: network, game, grapahics ands physics, we just need 3D models to make it good looking that’s all.

it wont really be a MMORPG, let’s says a SMORPG (S stands for small ;D).

See ya

Classic, best of luck to you! I hope this project probes your teachers wrong

Thanks, we intend to make them use Java for their research projects and why not sucribe to this forum! lol

Do you know m_ali_alex on this forum ? I think he’s trying to do the same thing as you (bringing ODEJava into its school).

No, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him on this forum, but he had a good initiative!
