I wanted to share with you the progress of my new game in development: New Greedy Snakes. This is based on the 4k version I submitted at the last 4k competition. So here is a blog about the graphics I made myself. Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress.
You know that’s always a good question. Backgrounds seem the most difficult because they’ve got to be interesting without drawing your eye too much. Since you’ve got the neon theme going on, maybe you could do something weird like make all the backgrounds look like part of a larger neon sign on the front of a pub? As in, you’re a bunch of worms crawling around inside a sign.
For backgrounds I have a couple of ideas. I was refering to the walls, those that are in red. At the moment they’re just plain. I was looking for texture suggestions about that. Like rock/stone? Which themes? For sure I’m thinking about natural elements but also artificial/abstract/funcky themes/elements. I’m thinking loud here.
EDIT:
Oh, and you’re the second person to think the snakes are worms. Should I just rename the game then??? Nah, worms eating eggs and mushrooms? Not credible.
well, you could just make a sequel and claim its completely different called “Super Greedy Worms”, reminds me of a certain company
EDIT: I updated this reply by error.
Well, not a bad idea. This could be good for marketing because in my 4k version, people thought it was no more than the snakes game but in fact it is more than that. That perception caused unexpected low play hits unfortunately. In the “non” 4k version I’m implementing new game play that brings much more than the 4k version. So I definitely need a viscerally strong game name that will prevent people to think it’s yet another snakes variation
the snake no longer grows as you eat. hmm why not? it gives better trap laying possibilities.
the opponent snake can reverse on itself, i can’t. Unfair.
Perhaps it is somewhat different from the original snakes, but if so it has to be made clear from the start what the difference is. Whats the hook, the gimmick?
So far perhaps the fact who eats most apples? or that you have hitpoints?
The combat seems hard at the moment, winning by collection is favored
bug, sometimes enemy selfdestructs with no apparent reason
And finally, these obviously had nothing to do with graphics, agreed they could be more neon smooth stuff, they are definitely in the right direction to my eye. Before stressing on polish i would resolve gameplay and feedback, at the moment it feels a bit funny, I know I am winning if i get to next level, but I am not told exactly why? because I ate more or cause i caused more damage i assume, but it’s not told to me. I know it’s more food, but when I’ve played a tight game and win by 1 apple, i should get my reward! phew, made it by just one over the opponent! give me candy!
Not bad, but that doesn’t fit my design plan. Thanks for suggestions though. I’m more into repeated abstract images or patterns in dark grey. To tell you everything, I was strongly inspired by java4k.com background. I fond that king of retro style really cool!
Thanks for all that feedback, but that applies mostly only to the 4k version. I know there’re several issues. Many of them were already fixed in the new version.
I don’t want the snakes to grow for now as this would makes gameplay much more difficult. I have to account for less skilled players. This is according to the feedback I got so far. Players here are very skilled and don’t necessarly represent the average player. BUT, I may incorporate this aspect later for a more difficult difficulty level. Good point finally.
About number 3, yes I’ll inform the player at the beginning, thanks.
Number 4 is already fixed in the new version. 5 is almost fixed.
Finally, you’ll enjoy nice bonuses during and after level play.
