Hello Everyone,
After completing the NeHe tutorials, making a few of my own 3d and 2d simple games, and reading 3 java books I decided its time to get serious. I have always liked RTS style games and have always wanted to make my own. For about the last year I have been running linux off my laptop and have been a little saddend by the lack of games. So I decided making my own RTS with java would be the perfect solution. So I started to brainsorm ideas. After looking through the various features of LWJGL I got my inspiration. I decided I wanted to use cell shading. I have decided to make an RTS either as a comic book style game where you control/fight citizens and attaempt to create super heros. Or, an RTS in the “Cartoon World” style where you fight cartoons for control of the cartoon world. I was wondering what you guys thought about this… good idea? or cheesy?
So an RTS game idea is about what kind of shaders you are going to use in the game ?
Eh? He already desided what theme he’ll be using. He’s just wondering what kind of style (gameplay) he’s gonna use: hero based or destroy-all-units based.
On topic:
I wouldn’t call it cheesy, as there are lots of good games using exactly the same kind of gameplay. It’s definitly worth the effort, if only to get more experience making bigger and more complex games. If you end up with a game that more than 10 people like and played more than once, you got something to be proud of, and a nice base to start your next even bigger game.
No thats more along the theme of the game. The gameplay will be simple more based on strategy rather than a bunch of unit types. I have the details written down in a design document but I was mainly asking if a cell shading style could be effective.
You should have a look at Advance Wars on the GBA. Although it’s sprite based the style would convert well into a 3d cel shaded world.

The only thing a cell shading style would be effective was in making the game presentation more or less original and in this case more is allways a good thing. Same for the gameplay.
If you can do the shaders and the art very well of course.
I’m the only one that votes “cell shading is weak”? Sure, this could work, but starting a game design with a graphic style, instead of developing a game and choosing the presentation is risky and weak.
So, there’s my two cents.
i didn’t really like the jump from 2d rts’s to 3d at first, but its slowly starting to grow on me, i really like the simple graphics of games like tiberian sun, red alert, warcraft 2, starcraft, etc. graphics which are clear and easy on the eyes is what i like, games like c&c generals had horrible looking infantry as they come out all box and hard to see.
cell shading 3d graphics could work but ultimatly it really depends on how u implement it and on you artistic style!
