Monospace 0.1.8

Hi guys!

I’m new to these boards, so nice to meet you all. I have been working on a game recently and thought you would be interested. It’s called Monospace; it’s a standard top-down space shooter, but I am planning to give it a few things that will make it stand out a bit more, like multiplayer (possibly) and awesome ship customizing options. And lots of boss fights.

Click the first link below to download the setup file. It will download the game launcher to your desktop, which will automatically keep your game uploaded. If you don’t want that, you can download the standalone game .jar file instead.

Cool game. The movement feels slightly strange though… maybe its just the lack of scrolling - You’re in vast space, but if you go out of a small predefined area of the universe, you are unable to see where you are going.

The enemy ships targeting aiming and following you too precisely doesn’t feel right either.

Yea, I’ll add scrolling in the next update or so.

That’s been mentioned to me before by others who have tried it, I think I will make the enemies target in the small area around the player, not directly at the player.

0.1.2-alpha is released!

  • added infinite scrolling in all directions
  • changed enemy behavior (suicide bombers, basic flight patterns)
  • score multiplier is now based on: how many enemies you are killing per second + the time you have gone without taking damage (that time only counts when you are actively killing enemies)

I also updated the launcher, so if it is giving you problems try re-downloading from the website.

0.1.3-alpha is released!

  • global leaderboards (server is down at the moment however)
  • multiplayer (still super buggy and crashes a lot)
  • added the first boss: the mothership
  • upgrade your ship after defeating a boss
  • added speed and defense powerups

I’ll try to push an update when the leaderboard server is online.

0.1.4-alpha is released!

Mostly just a bug fix update, but you can now hold your mouse to shoot instead of spamming it. Also, I may or may not have added a surprise :wink:

Reminds me a lot of EtSplodera.

It looks like a really neat project, I want to play it! :smiley:

Thanks! I plan on adding a lot more enemies and bosses this weekend, hopefully.

0.1.5-alpha is released!

  • multiplayer works decently, best results can be found on LAN
  • added local leaderboards
  • minor game progression tweaks
  • added second boss, kind of (unfinished!)

0.1.6 will be a content update, hopefully. More ships, more bosses. And maybe I’ll get that leaderboard server going! Stupid port-forwarding… ;D

0.1.6 is uploaded

  • finished 2nd boss
  • added medics that will heal enemy ships
  • changed how enemies are spawned (they spawn at intervals, not when the previous enemies have been killed)
  • added more powerups
  • bug fixes

0.1.7 is released!

Boring update, mostly just bug fixes and performance boosts. I nerfed the ship upgrades a bit to balance the game.

It was a lot of fun. I died to the mothership :frowning: I seem to take the most damage from just running into things though I’m known to be pretty clumsy. I like the effect/screen shake when you get hit but maybe you can add more effects when you hit an enemy ship. Pretty cool so far!

I’ll probably add more effects in soon, as well as some more enemy types. Thanks for playing! :smiley:
