Hi all,
We have posted the beta test version of our new game - ‘Monkey Trouble’ - on our website, please give it a go & tell us if it crashes/is rubbish/etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

The link is:
http://www.crystalsquid.com/beta/

<edit: Password no longer required, just click the link & play>

I hope it works & you enjoy it. If it does lock up or crash, can you post the contents of the Java console please.

there’s a problem with java 1.3 for me:

I think the awtEvent thread has not enough time to do it’s job: mouse movement/clicks are only updated every few seconds :-/

nice monkeys!

xp, IE, 1.3.1_04

Can’t load the page with appletviewer - presumably your php is refusing to send appletviewer the html?

EDIT: Why are you mucking about with a PHP’d iframe within a php page? Is it necessary?

Works perfectly within Opera & Java 1.4.2
Nice one, again!

Great game! ;D ;D

Totally cool. I love the twist of sliding the pieces up/down/right/left. Very nice.

works fine  ie6 java 1.4.2 winxp

Yeah, works fine for me. Hard game to get your head around, but excellent graphics, appropiate sounds, and lots of monkeys. Gotta have those monkeys.

WinME, JDK1.4.2, Mozilla 1.4.

Edit: Got to level 17 with 2,076,604 points. Blooming hard this game - too many coconuts for my liking. All my gold goes on buying bonuses to get rid of them.

And temporarily forgetting which button to use to pull monkeys down can rapidly start the sirens going… ::slight_smile:

Thanks for the feedback
Hansdampf - What spec PC are you using?
blahblahblah - The php’d iframe is used for the session cookie - it makes sure noone can link directly to the game, they have to link to the page it is on (hence why it won’t work in applet viewer)
swpalmer - Thats the stack I was after  Many thanks for trying it, & we’ll let you know when a fixed, hopefully Mac-compatible version is up.

Thanks again to everyone for their feedback,

  • Dom

Ok, we’ve posted a new version, without the BufferStrategy. Hopefully this will work on the Mac - fingers crossed, mutter mutter, cross-platform Java my a&$= :stuck_out_tongue:

  • Dom

Hi,

absolute COOOOOOOL game!!! I love it.

ciao torsten

OS X 10.3.1…

Works now… though I don’t know why BufferStrategy doesn’t work.

Ah - but there is no sound.

2400+,512,GF2

Yay! It works on the Mac! Except the sound, which is wierd as it is just using the java.sound.sampled stuff, which should work (the 1.1 mode has to use the naughty sun.audio stuff) Ho hum… Thanks for the help Scott

Hans - thats a better spec than my PC, yet it works Ok for me  I would reccomend upgrading your Java version :stuck_out_tongue:

  • Dom

It runs perfectly!!
Tested on: Win98SE, Opera, j2sdk1.4.1_01

For the game, it’s really fun just a little hard…

Rafael

Also works fine for me in IE - WinME, JDK1.4.2, IE 5.5.

Level 19, 3,002,423 points. Got a lot more gold this time around, and still had 5 gold in the bank and two unused bonuses at the end of the game. Had 11 gold spare at one point!

One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of the time I’m frustrated with the game. The problem as I see it is that while I need to look at the board to decide what to do, I then need to look away to aim my mouse at a (quite small) arrow to actually do anything. Frequently I miss the arrow because I can’t afford to take my eyes off the board, or I click the “wrong” arrow because the board moves when my eyes flick to the border.

As there is currently no functionality that requires clicking on the board itself, maybe you could include an alternative way of moving the board that way? Click a piece and drag it to move the monkeys in that direction, something like that?

I agree that the game controls could use a little tuning. I like the game concept, but I do find it a bit difficult.

The thing that stumps me is how to do the second bonus round. I haven’t got a clue what it is expecting me to do - so it always ends up that i lick almost randomly until my time runs out and i get a 0 bonus.

Thanks again for all the feedback
We will look at ways of making the controls less fiddly. We do have a short time after a row pops on where you will be sliding the row above (this is deliberate), and we have had some feedback that this can be off-putting, especially on later levels when everything is going quickly. Its tricky as there is not much room on the screen
The second bonus round you have to group all the monkeys of one colour together before they will pop. We eill look at making this clearer, maybe a drop-down help screen explaining it.

Ok, overall opinion on difficulty - is it too hard? Did you try the easy mode, or do you naturally want to start on ‘normal’?

  • Dom

PS: Highest score so far is 18 million, by me

Well… that much is already clear then… in that I can’t see how that is even remotely possible to do in the alloted time… if it is possible at all.

In fact I thought that I had done that… but nothing happened… so then I got confused, thinking that perhaps ALL of the monkeys had to be grouped at the same time - like solving a Rubic’s cube…

Of course in some cases it looks like grouping just one colour is like solving a Rubic’s cube
