Moderators

I hope this doesn’t sound un-community spirited but…

I realise that Chris, Jeff and everyone else at Sun is really busy, so could we please have a moderator across all forums that could tidy up after some of these out of category posts who pops in every day or so…

Todays target for this position would probably be Cas (princec).

Kev

I offered to take on a few more, and approx 5 months ago ChrisM said he’d set it up. Bit of a lead time on these things ;). If Chris hasn’t the time to set up individual mods then I agree than an uber mod would be better than nothing.

I would have suggested that the board members were given Kev’s proposed role - except that (as some feared and predicted) they (for whatever reasons) have so far almost entirely disappeared / done nothing. So I cannot suggest them :(.

I nominate blah^3 - he’s fairly active… unlike many of the existing moderators (and board of director members) that seem to disappear for months at a time.

OT:

I’m glad to see that we still have Sun participants though even when Jeff and Chris M. are off doing other things (that we never hear about because someone stopped doing a weekly “what’s up” ;))

Chris C., Athomas, trembovetski, others that I can’t remember at the moment, etc. I find your posts very helpful, and I’m sure the rest of the community appreciates having your participation.

edit:
hehe… soon as I post I see that Blah beat me to it!

Why not have several? That would reduce the chances that one would disappear (for whatever reason - illness, work, holiday) and leave us back at square one

In fact, I’d be tempted to say just automatically make a mod out of everyone who volunteers themself and has, say, 1000 or more posts - it’s not like we have any trouble-makers around here; I can’t think of anyone here who might do something bad (although there are plenty who I suspect have fluctuating free time, and might be good for a while then dormant for a while, etc - maybe for months at a time)

Yep, include me in that group - though I’m usually not ever absent for more than a week… the time I have per visit comes and goes.

I, also, offered to take on a lot more responsibility than I was assigned. Sounds like there’s a lot of helpful, willing and able people here, Chris! Why not take advantage of them?

In fact, I don’t see any real reason why the current moderator team couldn’t all be given global moderator privileges - I’m reasonably sure I’m not a raging psycho, and I suspect the rest aren’t either.

Note that I’m not talking about administrator control - leave that at Sun - just spread out the moderator control a bit more.

I asked a while back for complete godly powers. Gregorypierce is our mole on the board to get this accomplished.

Cas

Yes, some mods would be a good idea. It’s a good step for two reasons: it’s community-ish and (more important) it becomes self-organized/maintained. This board grew beyond a size were it could be moderated by a single person (a good thing, I might add :))… so this step is really necessary these days.

I would be perfectly fine with the current moderator crew.

So, what powers do mods have? Moving, deleting posts?

…and the inherit ability to leap small buildings in a single bound. :stuck_out_tongue:

Mods are good! Bring em on!

As a moderator its my duty to point out your typo there, there is only one O in the word you’re looking for

Kev

To be honest, the only times I’ve used the mod privs were to make threads sticky (and to encourage people to move threads to the relevant places). I’ve asked other mods to move a thread too and know they’ve done it e.g. when someone accidentally posts in completely the wrong category.

…if YABB didn’t suck so much, and offered more intelligent options for mods, I’d have done more, but that’s the only useful things you can do at the moment :). Unless you consider “editing other people’s posts so that they either appear to miraculously agree with you or appear to say really stupid things so that no-one believes them any more and everyone thinks your wonderful”.

I have been moderated.

On most boards it’s:
-open/close threads
-editing threads
-editing posts
-move threads
-sticky/unsticky threads
(and on some boards they also can add/remove mods for the subforums, wich they moderate)

and admins (aka supermods) also can:
-ban/unban users
-ban/unban ips
-change board settings
-add/remove mods
-add/remove subforums
-edit user accounts

Being an admin can be alot of work if the board gets big (especially if you have alot of trouble makers there - fortunately JGO isn’t like that :)).

Bump!

I know this is a touchy subject, but I still think its really worth resolving.

Kev

Do subjects like this have to wait until they are seen by those in the higher ranks (Sun guys) for any action to be seen to be taken?

Well, it requires administrator access to implement, so Chris (maybe Jeff?) needs to see and action it. :-/

Well, someone had better contact Chris then

Cas

Jeff asked Chris 2 days ago to make me a mod of the jinput forum (by email), so I’m guessing Jeff doesn’t have the privs :), and i’m still not there, so I guess Chris is busy, but then the whole point is to get some of the workload off them so that when they are busy, someone else can help out, but they can’t unload it till they arn’t busy, if you see what I mean
