Mobile Version of Forum

Any chance we can get a mobile version of the forum?

I vote against this suggestion. The current version seems to be satisfying even on my smartphone.

It’s hardly optimal though is it?

Kev

Nothing is optimal, every human creation is perfectible but is it worth the effort?

Over the last 3 years, JGO’s SMF current theme has gained my 31 addons. Porting these is out of the question. :frowning:

Fair enough.

Kev

I agree with that, the current version works perfectly on my smartphone ;D

I had the same problem on my highly customized Invision PowerBoard a few years ago on an old site of mine. It was so heavily customized the mobile version was just flat-out broke.

It’s a pain to develop custom plugins that work on both the mobile version of IPB and the normal version, I imagine it’s the same in SMF.

SMF can only be much, much worse. :point:

Site works fine on my 7 inch tablet. The only problem I have is image rich threads that can overwhelm my browser. For that I would like an option to display images as links not as actual graphics. That would help with toxic sections like the WIP board.

I might have to intercept the loading of animated GIFs… For some reason, it has become trendy in the last six months of so.

People forget that GIFs are huge, and mobile plans have limited bandwidth and expensive datatraffic. That ‘error report disguished as a movie’ can actually cost a whole lot of people a dollar to watch. Last but not least, they tend to cause mobile browsers to run out of memory and flat out crash.

Don’t like to keep requesting features willy-nilly, but if webm or whatever could be embedded then people could switch to gfycat like they should. Could even put a little reminder if they try to post an image tag ending in .gif “It would be appreciated if you rehosted this GIF from Gfycat, thanks” or whatever.

It’s not like the forum doesn’t work on my phone, it’s just the tiny links and layout isn’t designed for a small screen. Makes it slow to navigate and hard to use. Accepting blankly sub-optimal solutions without questioning ever leads to stagnation.

That said, if its a pita like Riven says, then fair enough, can’t fix everything.

Cheers

Kev

The currently supported embedded YouTube videos ought to be enough, right?

In other news: GIFs are no longer embedded and turned into a link instead.

A bit off topic, but(if there is I didn’t notice it) can there be an option to edit the JGO theme for personalization. I’m not too fond of the blue used, I prefer a sky blue.

Point your browser to a custom stylesheet.

If you exposed somehow the html5 markup, webm support would allow me to embed my videos from GNU Mediagoblin here. Anyway, I can post links.

I often browse jgo from my phone. It’s not optimal but it is usable. There is only one real issue I have. Writing posts on the phone is a bit of a pain, because the textbox is wider than the screen in portrait mode and sometimes the layout has a quirk and the post and preview buttons overlay the textbox, making it very hard to write or read/edit a longer post.

Hmm. It worked fine until I hit preview. After that I got the nice overlay

Imgur

Ugh… why so quickly? I don’t like opening a tab or going forward-backward everytime I want to see a gif… They are embeddable for a reason :frowning:

I know it’s harder to do, but a Klick-and-play (& load) for a gif would be the best compromise I think, but it’s not that easy to implement

Works perfectly fine on my phone too. Long live the zoom function.
