I am excited that Sun is getting into the MMOG middleware space with its new Sim/Game Server Technology, but I suppose I was hoping this was going to be something more along the lines of the J2EE specification. Aside from this and Grex (also closed source) what similar projects are out there in the open source space?
I keep doing my best to tell people about them, and they’re pretty spectacularly widely covered by now, but no-one seems to have heard of them ;).
PS I think it’s one of the best domain name choices I’ve ever seen. I eventually came up with the same idea/name but unfortunately about 2 years too late :(. Kudos to them for getting in early…
Other than that, there’s tonnes of o-s mmog work - and 99% is a waste of time as far as any remotely serious MMOG goes - very few of them could realistically handle more than a couple of hundred players. They’re good places to learn a bit about MMOG dev (not too much, but a lot more than nothing), but last time I looked WF was far and away the best concentration and the best opportunities to “get dirty” with MMOG dev.
NB IIRC they’re the only o-s group that have turned up to the MUD-DEV conferences and dinners, and usually there’s several of them there. If you’re not part of MUD-DEV, then you’re either not serious or not diligent about MMOG’s…
Good point. However, the founder and CEO left quite acrimoniously IIRC a little over a year ago, which is never a particularly good sign, and nevrax.org has had no news since 2003.
IIRC the game is being developed by the commercial entity, so not of much interest to someone wanting to be involved in open-source stuff.
More to the point IMHO is that nevrax has done basically nothing of any interest within the industry - I haven’t seen them talking about things or contributing to general fora (although this may just be that their members have been doing so incognito), or if I have they said so little that I forgot about it :(. The open-source side of nevrax seems to have been (or become - c.f. loss of CEO above) more of a cynical business plan ploy than a “genuine” move.

Heh, I suppose I don’t post there often, but we have had an off list email conversation or 2 about topics we both posted on.
As for WorldForge and Nel, thanks. I have looked in to Nel before, but not WorldForge. I suppose I should qualify my question though. I was specifically refering to Java based projects.
