Mighty Bubbles - GDC 2005

Hello All,

new versions of Mighty Bubbles have been uploaded in the last 2 weeks. The latest version includes:

  • multiple new foreground graphics
  • enhanced new text graphics
  • few new sounds for bubble collisions
  • the hero jump has a variable height. The height depends on the duration of the pressed Z button.

I went to GDC 2005 and I presented the game on the independent games PC and it was pretty cool to talk to people there. I have to say that Chris and people in its crew are very sympatic persons! It’s very cool to talk to someone that you’ve always discuss or interact with only via the web.

So please give a try to my new version.

Any feedback is welcome!

Hi, I couldn’t manage to have variable height jumps…
is it the Z key or the X key or another ? (Z is for shooting as it seems).

Still no sound on Mac…

I like your new intro, and i’m getting used to the childish graphics (reminds me of wonder boy - a game of the 80’s), but haven’t been able to play for a long time : the game crashed at the first save point :-[

i can get variable jumps but its ever so small difference, its a nice feature however would be better if it was more sensative, (ie, small tap makes very smaller jump)

what i really like in platform games, are the small touches which really make a good game a brilliant game. Such as the character in Mighty Bubble looks very wooden when standing still, maybe you could make him breath when standing still or blink, or scratch his head or something. basically more animation frames for the character would be cool. (ultimatley something like when sonic stands idle he taps his foot, earthworm jim plays with his gun, sometimes accidently shooting himself)

keep up the good work

Ho sorry for the jump key. It’s the X key instead of Z. Concerning the min height I figured out that having a too small jump would frustrate the player over time since he could not jump on anything.

For the stand still animation you’re perfectly right. The game is still just a demo. I’m in the analysis/R&D phase. When I’ll start the commercial dev much more things like the animations will be much more better.

And yes still no sound on Mac. I’m waiting for the new LWJGL version that will have support for FMOD on Mac.

c_lilian, could you give me details/JWS traces concerning the crash on the first same point please?

Thanks all for your feedback!

unable to get it to work on linux i get an error!

Jump : may be you could try to jump on key release instead of key press (it’s my second jump which is higher). Don’t know it would be good or not.

Sorry i can’t reproduce it…

The Linux problem should be fixed now. Could you test again please?

Thanks

unfortunetly the problem is still there!

i think either the url “http://datadino.com/games/mightbubbles/lib/linux/linux.jar” in the jnlp is wrong or the file is not there, put the url in browser gives a 404 error!

Webstart cache problem? Please empty the cache in webstart and your browser too because I really updated the .jnlp file with the new href.

sorry but still get the error!

OK. I’ll debug this tonigh and make sure all the paths are correct.

Thanks!

Ran nice for me on Win XP.

runs perfectly now, on windows & linux!

thanks for testing!

Nice game! I’m working on a platform game too at the moment… I liked the graphics too! Especially the backgrounds  What format is the music and did you make it yourself?

Thanks!

I made the graphics myself but the music comes from modarchive.com. I use the FMOD API. I wish I could compose music.

Keep in mind that this is just a demo. I’m working on a new commercial platform/puzzles game. It contains a hero that is older and has magical capabilities.

What is the platform game you’re working on?

Am I just stupid or is it that when I jump at your save points nothing seems to happen and when I die i just start back in the beginning again

You have to press A to active a save point when you’re in front of one. The next you’ll die, you’ll reapear in front of that save point.
