Well, it’s been confirmed
https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-were-being-bought-by-microsoft/
1 billion euro (taxes) is a lot of money, let’s hope that they do something fun with it (especially Markus with his 71%) and that Microsoft doesn’t ruin Minecraft
Mike
Insane…
Notch won’t be doing something fun with it (at least not for us), he doesn’t want to make a next big hit: http://pastebin.com/n1qTeikM

How much did sun sell for again :point:
Somehow that interview with Chris and some sun higherup where he’s applauded with “doing so much with so little” got a whole new dimension.
Heh, anyway I think it’s awesome for Markus. Maybe now that he no longer has to all run that stuff, he’ll post here again.
Kinda reassuring that some people out there rather want to stay close to who they are, make ludlum dare games and silly blog posts rather than play at being all-important CEO bossy guy.
Good for him, sounds like a pretty wise decision.
Also, whoa, that’s a boatload of money! On the other hand: what’s the practical difference between 1M dollars and 1B dollars? Both are more than you will ever need to live a happy life. The larger amount is probably more of an obstacle than a help.
Some more information:

I think the practical difference is that you still have to continue working in some capacity if we had 1M where as 1B not so much. 1M is what the avg american earns in 20 years or so.
I don feel like adding taxes and inflation to mix :clue:
The short 1M isn’t as much as it used to be.
You seem a bit depressed to me.
I just hope microsoft dont ruin the game. PFF
I may have just lost pretty much all motivation to update my Minecraft mods.
Oh well… I have my own projects to work on (even though that mod is my favorite project).
Hm, I already bought Minecraft for like 20€.
Why did they pay so much :persecutioncomplex:
Anyway, good Deal for Mojang.
Lots of inspiration came from that game.
So Notch might come back to the forum?
I think my issue is the same as everyone else’s.
Im worried that Microsoft will destroy the minecraft community (Stop people from making videos and mods etc…)
Hopefully notch will just take a nice vacation and relax, then return to being a nerdy computer programmer
There was a statement from Notch:
I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol
I guess he would join incognito into online forums, not to get all trampled over by fans.
…understandable
Good for Markus and team! I hope he gets to pull back now and do whatever he enjoys doing with his life. Having a game blow up like this must have been a really double edged sword. Success is great and all but someone (like Markus) who gets a fan base like would have had unbelievable responsibility toward their fans, which would probably be no fun at all, and was definitely not his original intention.
I’m pleased for Notch and Mojang… But won’t MS port the game to C#? I can’t see them willingly cultivating a generation of teen Java devs
It’ll be interesting to see where MS takes Minecraft.
ACTUALLY…now he has the time and freedom to do exactly that: make games and stuff for fun.
My congratulations to him and Mojang’s success. To also know what makes ones self happy and step away from the things that don’t is a difficult thing to do. Congratulations Markus, now go build WURM 2.0 Or some more 4K bits.
Oh, and HELLO THERE JGO Hope you are all well!
Whoa, it’s Chris!
Yeah I hope he can go do what he wants to now, but I fear it may be difficult to escape the notoriety, at least for a while. He did mention it, and said that he at least doesn’t feel the obligation to acknowledge it though.
Congrats/condolences to Notch and the rest of the team.
I’ve been a lurker here for years now, and although I never really “knew” Notch, I was around before he got super famous. I even remember the original Minecraft thread!
And it’s been really surreal for me to watch Notch go from this regular dude posting his experimental games in the forum to this force. It’s been surreal to watch this forum go from a bunch of old fogies talking about Java and game development, to a bunch of younger kids mostly inspired by Minecraft. There’s nothing inherently wrong with younger people getting into programming, and in fact I would say it’s mostly a great thing. But the change has been pretty stark, which is just sorta… weird.
And that’s coming from me, just a random non-famous lurker. So I can only begin to imagine how weird it must be for Notch himself.
Couple that with the stuff that Cas has been going through lately, and the Zoe Quinn drama, and I just sorta feel bad for these “famous” folks. The “typical” gamer is probably pretty obnoxious to deal with, and millions of them must be almost unbearable sometimes.
So I hope Notch can find a way back to his roots, just being a random dude on the forums posting his experiments. And the billion dollar nest egg probably won’t hurt either.
Oh, and HELLO THERE JGO Hope you are all well!
Oh we hope you are well ^^
So Notch might come back to the forum?
That would be hilarious. Using a fake/new name or something.
Regardless of Notch’s “You guys just don’t get it” cop-out post, Notch is still a sellout of his core ethics. You can wave the “but it’s 2.5 BILLION” flag around all you want, but facts are facts, when you already have hundreds of millions of dollars in your bank account 2.5 billion for a guy like notch (who isn’t about power/corporate greed) is just a random number. He, his kids, and his kid’s kid’s kid’s kid’s can all live off the hundreds of millions he has right now… Assuming they don’t want a solid gold house on an island or something equally retarded.
Thus, no matter how you look at it, this just proves one thing: Notch’s gaming-for-the-gamers ethics are complete, absolute, total bullshit. If he actually cared, he would of just given the company away to the other 2 owners and lived out his life just a comfortable with or without the 2.5 billion. Not ruin his entire reputation for more money he quite literally does not need.
Although having said all that; I’m actually glad Microsoft bought Mojang. Minecraft’s development process is, and always has been, a bit of a train wreck with very little direction. Maybe MS can bring in some professional developers and Mojang will stop treating Minecraft like the world’s largest hobby project.
